Re: Oracle licence for hp rp4440-8
Oracle is not licensed by users.
All current licenses that I am aware of are unlimited user.
Unlimited user is $40,000 per cpu. You can use vpar on certain hardware to reduce the number of CPU's working oracle, with a correlating loss in processing power for the oracle instances.
There is a 3 year license that I heard of that costs about 35% of the $40,000 per cpu, but at the end of the period you have to relicense again.
As a charity, Oracle has offered us substantial discounts on its list price. If you are a big customer you can use your power to get a substantial discount as well.

Re: Oracle licence for hp rp4440-8
As I pressed submit, new thoughts came to mind.
Since you are Serviceguard, you'll never have more than 4 CPU's running your oracle applications. Under my udnerstanding of Oracle's license agreement you don't have to license oracle on the failover node. You just aren't legally permitted(technically you can) to run the Oracle database license on all 8 CPU's at the same time.
So you don't need 8 licenses, you need 4.
BTW, Oracle Application Server license, ias,as etc, is $20,000/cpu with the same discount plan for short term licenses mentioned in my prior post.
In 1998 we purchased an Oracle 50 user license for a substantail sum. We're sticking with that until we feel its inevitable that 50 simultaneous users will be using the oracle application we're migrating too.

Re: Oracle licence for hp rp4440-8
If you use active-standby cluster, you need 4CPU Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition license as the minimum (rp4440 is 4 socket system, so the Standard Edition is OK). If you use active-active cluster you need 8CPU license Standard or Enterprise Edition. If you use RAC you need 8CPU Enterprise Edition with RAC option.
