unable to start OracleTNSListener80

I am having trouble starting OracleTNSListener80 on my DATABASE Server. My OS is Windows NT 4.0. I am using Oracle 8.0.4.
The agent and the database startup but not the listener. Your immediate responds will be greatly appreciated.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

Maybe the port is hung. You could try starting it on another port.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

I currently using Port 1521. What port would you suggest.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

If 1522 is not being used change your listener and /etc/services to use it.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

I working with an windows NT, the /etc/services
would be where? I mostly familiar with HP systems and where stuff is located.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

Hi Ken
I found the services in the orant/net80/agent directory, made the changes to the port. Still no response from listener.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

Assuming that the OracleTNSListener80 is started in the services window, you should be able to go to the command prompt and run the following:

lsnrctl80
- stop
- start

If you get any errors from this, please post them.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

Make sure that the listener was configured using the Net8 assistant.
You should configure a listener before you start it.

Also make sure that you have proper entries in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora file

Post your listener.ora file.
What is the name of the instance you are trying to create.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

hi Evella,

Yes, post your listener.ora. Most probably there is any error in this configuration file. Normally, there should not be any problems with port 1521!

Also, post the output of:
lsnrctl80 status

For example, on my working system i get the following output (DOn't worry about the OS version, the outputs are in the same format).
==================================================================================
L-oracle8i: d01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7>lsnrctl status

It will be good if you could also locate the listener.log and post also.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

HI anyone
In response to your answers, the OracleTnsListener80 is not started in the window services. I have tried to start Listener

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

This looks like the ORACLE_HOME is not correctly set. Have you installed other oracle software in a different ORACLE_HOME on this same machine?

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

Thanks to all who responded to my problem. You input helped to inprove my knowledge of the Listener process.

My OracleTnsLister80 in up and running. There was something in my orant/bin directory that was corrupted. I reloaded that directory from a previous windows nt backup tape.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

Hi can i know, from where you were able to replace it from. I came to know that oracle 8.0.5 is not compatable with win 2K advanced server. Is it true.

Re: unable to start OracleTNSListener80

hi
I backup my current /bin directory to tape. We backup our systems every night, therefo I had a previous copy of my Orant/bin directory on tape. I reloaded the /bin directory, then my listener started working.
