Solution
The answer is it depends. If you buy the 7200 RPM version of the 18GB's then no you can keep the old fans but if you buy the 10,000 RPM versions then you must replace the fans. If the little fan labels are flat you have the lo-speed fan modules; the hi-speed fans have a raised 'bubble' label where the little fan is.
I would seriously consider upgrading to the 36GB drives. The cost isn't much different and the increase in capacity is quite large. If your AutoRAID is getting to near 3 years in age, you probably need to replace the controller batteries.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Adding drives to autoraid
Sorry, I missed the cache question. Your controllers should already have 96MB of cache installed. When you replace the drives, the process is very simple. The 12H should be 'Ready'. This assumes that 'Auto Include Disk' is enabled.
while NEW_DISKS > 0
1) Remove ONE drive
2) Insert New Drive
3) Wait for light show to quit (which can take some time) and Drive displays 'Ready Again'
NEW_DISKS--
