I have an EVA 4400 and have presented a LUN to a Win2k3 server.
Now we are planning to upgrade the OS to Win2k8 and present the same LUN to it.
Query is, will the data be lost if I present the LUNs, which was earlier presented to Win2k8, when presented to Win2k8 server ?
Cheers

Re: Presenting LUNs from Win2k3 to Win2k8.
not sure, probably this will work.
try this by crating clone of old disk and presenting it to another server running win2008.
btw - to not forget to change host type under CV from windows to windows2008 - very importand after upgrading the server.

Re: Presenting LUNs from Win2k3 to Win2k8.
Thank you for the reply.
I would have tried the same, however, unfortunately, we do not have the permission to create a demo LUN and try it out.
I do feel that it will work but needed a confirmation or a documentation which says the same. Also if the data is NOT lost(ie. intact) in the process, then is there any chances that it will have affect on something else eg. user permissions, authentication, etc... ?
Cheers

Re: Presenting LUNs from Win2k3 to Win2k8.
I think it is more Microsoft related question.
At least create some dummy data disk and try such migration - if you have any free server for testing.
Otherwise, backup, backup, backup and if not working restore data.

SolutionYou can do the below steps.
1. Shutdown the server and Disconnect the Fibre Cables from the server.
2. Upgrade the OS from Win2k3 to Win2k8
3. Update the HBA drivers to later and like MPIO etc.
4. Shutdown the servers
5. Change the Host mode from CVEVA to "Windows 2008"
6. Power on the server
There should not be any issue of accessing the LUNS.
As a general practice make sure you have a backup of the LUNs before proceeding for OS upgrade.

Re: Presenting LUNs from Win2k3 to Win2k8.
I hope that it works without any issues (fingers crossed ;).
If you have some more information regarding the best practices or any procedure to follow, do share it with me.

Re: Presenting LUNs from Win2k3 to Win2k8.
If i present the LUN to a Win2k8 server and later unpresent it and present it to a Win2k3 server (the other way round)... so at this time, will the data be available/accessible ?

Re: Presenting LUNs from Win2k3 to Win2k8.
I am not sure but you may encounter signature mis-match issue. Because every OS writes its signature to lun before making it available for use.
So if after present the lun to win2k8 you are not able to read then you may need to import the old signature of win2k3 to this lun.
I would suggest you to to take help of Microsoft for signature importing (only if you get in stuck here)
Thanks,
BK

Re: Presenting LUNs from Win2k3 to Win2k8.
That could come in handy if it does not work straight forward.
Also could someone plz update on the backward compatibility ie. to my second query:
"If i present the LUN to a Win2k8 server, write data in it and later unpresent it and present it to a Win2k3 server (the other way round)... so at this time, will the data be available/accessible ?"
