Adding Processor to FC6, will I need to.....

Well, the time has finally come. I am actually going to fill the second processor slot in my home server and move into the dual processor realm at home.

What I have read so far on Fedora Core 6 seems to lead a person to believe that the default kernels being shipped with and to all versions of FC6 are now capable of multi-processor support 'out of the box' and it is no longer needed to get a special kernel if you have more than one.

I can live with that. My only question is whether or not I will need to do anything special to get this all to work, or will it simply be a matter of unplugging, installing, and turning it all back on?

I would like very much to avoid a re-install of the OS if possible, but I would also like to take advantage of the dual processors ASAP as well, so any words of wisdom on this will be gladly accepted.

Yes it should work out of the box. FC6 default kernel is indeed SMP-capable.

Shalom,

Reboot the box and the hardware will be active.

Since you needed to shut it down to install the CPU, merely touch the power button.

Re: Adding Processor to FC6, will I need to.....

Thank you, gentlemen.

That is the way I read it, but it is still hard to believe that it is that simple. After all, it was not all that long ago when getting a multi-processor system up and going was a bit of a challenge.

I just wanted to hear from someone that had the hands on experience to set my mind at ease.

I will update the thread and assign points when the project is complete.

Make it a WONDERFUL day!

Nup. The boy's above have said it right.

It's simple, straight forward, and takes only moments.

Before a shutdown, do a 'uname -v', make sure it says 'SMP' (it will), then issue a 'shutdown -h'.

Crack it open, put in the processor/VRM modules, power back up. At worst you may want to tweak the BIOS (ensure the OS is set to Linux to set the APIC modes nicely etc.), then let it boot.

Once booted, verify '/proc/cpuinfo', and you're a happy man *nod*.

Re: Adding Processor to FC6, will I need to.....

Worked like a charm, just as you all said it would.

It somehow seems a bit too easy, but I am using the box to respond at this moment.

Thanks, guys!
