Help! Move new kernel into place

I changed the SEMMNI value and rebuilt the system and it won't boot. I have it up in the chroot /ROOT recovery mode from Ignite, with networking enabled. I went to the place where it said I could "download a working kernel". I was able to restore the working kernel from a tape to another server. How can I get the kernel onto the system from another system? Most commands don't work (ie: cp, ftp, etc). Thanks, if you can help!

Re: Help! Move new kernel into place

Hi Sally:

You should have a copy of the previous kernel in your '/stand' directory as '/stand/vmunix.prev'.

Re: Help! Move new kernel into place

I believe vmunix.prev is corrupt as well.

Re: Help! Move new kernel into place

Do you have an ignite tape or is it backed up over the network?

If the latter, if you put in your OS CD-ROM it will give you an option to recover from a network backup.

Re: Help! Move new kernel into place

It is backed up over the network with dataprotector. I booted off Ignite.

Re: Help! Move new kernel into place

DP is used for backing up data, not the operating system - a DP backup will only help if DP software is available on the server (which it won't be if the server is down).

When you say you booted off ignite, do you mean you have an ignite tape of the server?

Re: Help! Move new kernel into place

I booted off an Ignite vpar. So what if I restore the good working kernel into the ignite vpar directory....could I copy it from there to the server?

Sally,

Try this doc. (chapter Recovering the Kernel Only)

Re: Help! Move new kernel into place

Found a pretty old kernel elsewhere on the system, but good enough to get me going again.

Thanks!
