I'm relatively new to the unix environment and have heard conflicting comments about how often the system(s) require rebooting to maintain/increase performance.
What is the recommended time period, why, and where is it documented?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: Reboot Strategy
Hello Joanne,
there is not really a recommended timeframe for a reboot.
It probably doesn't hurt to get on a regular schedule, but it is not necessary.
If you have a feeling, that the system is eating up more resources then it might be a good time to reboot.
You can always check with the following commands if a reboot would "make a difference":
1) ps -ef
ckeck for zombie process
2) who -a
check if old logins are still sitting there
Of course there is always maintenance which needs to be done. By having a window of maintenance and reboot those changes can be scheduled, eg. patching, lvm changes, filesystem changes, etc.
Hope that helped a bit,
