Ubuntu on 2510p: closing lid causes freeze
I am running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) on my HP Compaq 2510p, and I'm very happy with this setup*.
However, there is one persistent issue:
When closing the lid, all inputs are disabled (indicated by the orange touchpad button) and the system seems frozen.
Sometimes pressing the touchpad button reactivates the machine, but usually I have to shut it down hard.
This happens although I have disabled any such behavior (System > Preferences > Power Management > On AC/Battery Power > When laptop lid is closed: Blank screen).
I have also tried the following, without success: "sudo echo 1 > /proc/acpi/video/C099/DOS".
This is a very annoying issue, so I would be immensely grateful for any help!
* only the SD card reader and some of the touch-sensitive buttons seem unsupported

Re: Ubuntu on 2510p: closing lid causes freeze
Its unlikely that Ubuntu was tested on this hardware.
This problem comes from a lack of support and drivers for the hardware function that controls sleep for the OS.
I found this functionality was working ans present with my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I've found their support and driver structure, especially for Ubuntu is better than most.
As the laptop gets old and more widely known, support generally improves. I also found Ubuntu's hardware support, especially wireless to be the best among distros.

Re: Ubuntu on 2510p: closing lid causes freeze
Will report back here once I have results (might take a while, as I'll need to create a disk image first, among other things).

Re: Ubuntu on 2510p: closing lid causes freeze
Why are you creating disk images???
Gusty to hardy upgrade is simple and safe, you can do it by using software updater. When you check for updates it will show that a new release is available and you can click the upgrade button to go to hardy, with almost no downtime(you will need a reboot when the upgrade is done).

Re: Ubuntu on 2510p: closing lid causes freeze
Simple paranoia - better safe than sorry.
Also, since I didn't know what I was doing when I first started with Linux a few months ago, I'll take this opportunity to start from scratch (re-importing only the essential bits of my current home folder).
