mails not coming...
require help on this.
Sendmail is configured to work as a mail server. incoming mails are not coming to users' PC. it is getting delivered at /var/mail/$logname.
gives the following error in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file

Apr 16 15:38:05 unix popper[4909]: Unable to create temporary temporary maildrop

e.
Apr 16 15:38:05 unix popper[4909]: -ERR POP timeout
Apr 16 15:38:05 unix popper[4909]: (v2.1.3-R3) Ending request from "vnpattar" at
(21.4.2.72-VN.Pattar-411) 21.4.2.72
while any user try to access his mails from a windows PC.
tried telnet serverip 110 from the server itself. shows
Connected to unix
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK UCB Pop server (version 2.1.3-R3) at unix starting.
Please help me...
it was working all fine just before the reboot.
the popper service is getting started. am able to see from the syslog file

I hope these POP3 accounts are nothing but unix accounts (?!). In that case can you see there is no mbox files under the user's home ?.
The filename is "mbox"
See I am not very confident in suggesting this hence mv it some where else and give it a try !

ll /usr/sbin/popper
was showing the file of size 65537 with a root:email (user:group)
but when on the other server i saw it with a different size and permission.
copied the file to the problematic machine
removed entry for pop from /etc/inetd.conf
did an inetd -c
added entry for pop
again did an inetd -c
and things started working....
all bunnies to me....
but i need to figure out how this got changed. I'm sure everything was working smooth before the reboot

This is nothing to do with size of the popper or inetd services.
This occurs when the user does not have the permissions to create the .user.pop in the temporary drop directory (which defaults to the mail spool directory). Check the permissions of this directory.
