HP-UX Upgrade
Hi we have 2 servers used to house oracle apps enivonment (11.5.10.2 (32bit) sitting on 9206 64bit database) ,where server 1 (buzz) is the database server and server 2 (woody) is the apps server.
The o/s on both server is HP-UX 11.0. and this goes out of support at the end of the year we need to upgrade this to HP-UX-11i (v1 or v2) - see right at bottom of this query for h/w specs of current servers.
I therefore was wondering if you could address the following:-
(1)How easy is it to upgrade from 11.0 to 11i? What are the risks and what can we do to reduce this risk?
(2)Are there any real life case studies documented for our scenario which we could review?
(3)How does on go about this upgrade?
(4)Once O/S is upgraded do 3rd party applications like Oracle apps/databases need to be rebuilt or can we simply start them up as previously without any impact?
(5)Any other advice you can provide?
Thank you
BUZZ

Re: HP-UX Upgrade
Hi,
IMHO, the best way to upgrade machines is installation from scratch.
If your vg00 is mirrored, you can reduce mirroring (this gives you bootable and mountable HPUX11.00) build hpux11.11 on the second disk and to install all needed SW.

Re: HP-UX Upgrade
Shalom,
A little story.
I once upgraded three identical machines in HP's Atlanta labs. I took pains to do everything according to the instructions and went very slowly on machinese with identical hardware and Ignite images.
1 failed, two suceeded.
Oracle actually doesn't support this upgrade method, though if you can get Oracle to re-link after installing a ton of patches, it will probably not work.
Best bet is what Victor said.

Re: HP-UX Upgrade
thanks to all those who have responded - much appreciated.
the root filesystem is indeed mirrored so are you saying that i just de-couple the mirror and simply install from scratch on one of the disks and once its installed successfully and tested then to re-mirror it again? Also if it fails i have the other disk to fall back to?
What is the recommended oracle method of upgrading HP-UX?
thanks
