Re: Is Linux supported on PA-RISC based hpux

It is not support officially, but there is a project named PA-RISC Linux developing a Linux for PA-RISC architecture. This Linux is based on Debian 3.1. for further information take a look at following link.

Hi Shiv,

Is Linux supported on PA-RISC based hpux ?

Ans: You'll need a separate disk drive for Linux from HP-UX. Sorry for that limitation but it's the way things are.

You can go through the following web link:

http://www.parisc-linux.org/software/install.html

To know more about PA-RISC based hpux. Go through the following web link:

Another distribution which was recently ported to the PA-RISC architecture is Gentoo Linux.Gentoo is completely compiled from source and uses a BSD-style ports system, so expect lots of compilation time.

All the models are not supported with these projects (because of different chipsets and other components of servers) so you should check hardware compatibility too.

Yes Shiv,

You can run pa-linux on PA-RISC HP-9000 systems.

I'd hardly consider the selection however to be enterprise level or reliable enough to run a business on it.

Generally people do it to get some extra use out of older boxes they don't want to maintain HP-UX licenses on.

Re: Is Linux supported on PA-RISC based hpux

Hi Shiv,

the anwer varies between "no" and "somewhat".

The earlier posters gave you the "somewhat".

The "no" depends upon what model of HP 9000
you are using. Earlier models are generally
not supported by anyone. The Linux-on-PARISC
group, for example, provides no assistance
for HP 9000/Ex5 platforms. However, some
end-users have had some success in getting
a port sort of running on some old
systems (e.g., 9000/E35).

What model of HP 9000 are you interested
in putting Linux on?
