Solution
Will, if you're doing self maintaining,
and want to borrow a RAM board, let me know.
I've got a spare 512 MB SIMM (Samsung, shipped to me by HP in a new A Class system) that I removed from a working system (when I upgraded it to 2 GB).

That is an incredibly nice gesture, however I think we are going to contact the reseller of the box. We seem to be up against a hardware issue here and before we void any warranties it would be wise to see if we can get a replacement. When we do eventually get this all sorted out I will make sure to post the solution. Thanks again to everyone for the timely and excellent postings.
