VMware Management agents for System Insight Manager (SIM)
John had a management question:
*****************
Does anyone have info on installing the HP Management agents on VMware.

Some replies:
Chris said:
If you use the HP branded version, downloaded from HP it will have the agents and drivers installed.

Stephen also replied:
John, Here’s what I found.
Management is done via the ESX and ESXi host with no agents or software installed on the guests
- ESX servers are managed via SNMP
- ESXi servers are managed via WBEM providers
ESX:
- Install the correct PSP/Software Management Pack on the ESX host and configure SNMP
- This is a link to the Software Management Pack for ESX 4 running on a BL460c. Click on Software Management, Click on latest Management Agents for ESX 4.x, and download. The installation directions indicate that guests on the host must be powered off or in a suspend state during install.
Make sure you search for and download the correct bundle that match your server and ESX version. Start at www.hp.com, Click Support & Drivers, Enter your server type, and follow the links to the correct versions. In this case you are looking for the “Management Agents”.
- Run the Discovery Task for the ESX host and guests within SIM and configure the SNMP credentials for your SNMP community name.
ESXi:
- If you loaded your VMWare from an image provided by HP, it already includes the required WBEM providers.
- If you need the HP WBEM providers, you can follow the same path as above. However, Click on Operating System Enhancements, Click on HP ESXi Offline Bundle and download. Follow the installation directions.
- See this link: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1590665 it has some good info from VMWare on configuring SIM.
- Also see attached document.
- Run the Discovery Task for the ESX host and guests within SIM and configure the WBEM credentials. Default would be root.
Make sure you search for and download the correct bundle that match your server and ESX version. Start at www.hp.com, Click Support & Drivers, Enter your server type, and follow the links to the correct versions. In this case you are looking for the “Offline Bundle”.
And this was from John B.:
Here are the instructions for VMware 4.1 ESX, ESXi is managed differently.
Copy the .tgz file to the ESX host and untar it, go the directory you specified and read the README.txt file.
