Windows 2008 R2 + HP DL 380 + MSA1000
Hi, I have actually an HP MSA1000 (P/N 201723-B22) with a fiber channel switch "HP StorageWorks 2/8q FC Switch", now I want to use the storage present on this product with a new server HP DL380 Win 2008 R2, but I'm confused about configuration, could you help me? I can work with Windows ISCSI initiator? How can I configure MSA 1000? Witch type of hardware I need on new server?
Thankyou!

Re: Windows 2008 R2 + HP DL 380 + MSA1000
Hi,
you need to have a server with a FC HBA. Check HP SPOCK / HP Quickspecs for your generation of the DL380 to find a compatible one.
iSCSI initiator will not work between a server and this MSA1000.
You could of course set up an iSCSI target on your new server but that's another thing completely.
If there is no zoning configured you should be able to see the MSA1000 in HP's ACU - array configuration utility. It's in this tool (free software that can be installed in win2k8) where you create arrays, logical drives and then presents the LUN (in SSP - selective storage presentation). The MSA1000 also has a serial port (is an RJ-45z, not for TCP/IP) on the front and you can manage the switch via ethernet (I believe, not familiar with the q-version).

Re: Windows 2008 R2 + HP DL 380 + MSA1000
Thanks for the answer, I planned to mount an AP769A - HP 81B PCIE 8GB FC SINGLE PORT HBA, but my question is, when I attach the server to switch how can I assign and create LUNs on MSA1000? Now the zoning are already configured for other server, I want to delete the actual configuration and recreate a new one,
Thankyou

Re: Windows 2008 R2 + HP DL 380 + MSA1000
Hello DPE 5 Hyper-V,
if you have zoning configured already, you probably need to zone in the new HBA with the MSA. It might also be that you have DID,PID zoning and that is already configured, then you don't need to do any zone configuration.
You do the zoning on the switch so you need to access the switch, supposedly via Ethernet or TCP/IP and to the web interface or the CLI (ssh/telnet).
In ACU you can remove the presentation and create a new one after the MSA1000 has been zoned in with the server.
Does that make sense? Any more questions?

Re: Windows 2008 R2 + HP DL 380 + MSA1000
Ok thankyou, I've verified with HP that the correct HBA is AE311A HP FC1142SR 4GB PCI-E HBA (QLOGIC QLE2460), now things are clearer to me, thanks for your interest,
By,
Marco
