VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

Hello,

I am trying to install an ATI Radeon 7000 VGA card on my system but I have some difficulties.

I installed the card, selected as Primary device in EFI, then the system doesnt come up (this either with NC or S for the other console device). I cannot login to it via ssh and the EFI Console hangs at "Launching /stand/vmunix".

If I check the screen connected to the VGA cars I just installed, it says : "Booting Kernel".

What am I missing !?

Thank you !

Re: VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

Shalom,

That card will not work.

Remove it.

The system has a built in SVG card and that is sufficient for graphics work.

These servers are not PC's and you can't just drop any card you want in it.

Obtain any graphics enhancements/cards from HP, not your local computer store.

Re: VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

IMHO this VGA card is not supported as a console.

Do you have the MP with or without VGA?

What does

Shell> conconfig

say?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

Ok... Following the various replies, here is what's going on.

Steven E. Protter:
I would think the card is compatible as per our vendor's statements + link below.

Torsten:
We have a MP without VGA.

Bottomline, I got it to "work", the only thing I can do is start the bootup process (EFI menu), it does not act as a console output.

Should I expect more than that ??

Thank,
MP

Re: VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

The manual says nothing about console, only how to configure a X-device.

The manual about the 7500 card says more clearly:

"The EFI console has the ability
to display output to any of the
VGA devices. Console output is
only supported on the serial
console for systems with ATI
Radeon 7500 cards installed."

I assume the same for the 7000 card.

Hope this helps!

Re: VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

Unless you want to use it as a workstation, you'll be better off forgetting about using a VGA screen and and keyboard with an Integrity server. They might be useful if running Windows, but not HP-UX. In my opinion, instead of hooking it up to a racked KVM or a screen you're better off using the iLO which is almost on par with the Proliants to this level.

As a sidenote, I also keep a USB to serial adapter tied behind most of my racks in case I'm stuck with a laptop and need emergency console serial access.

Good luck

... and I forgot about a null modem cable, which is also needed.

Re: VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

ATI 7000 is only good to access the EFI boot menu through our kvm setup, past this point there is no use to it.

Re: VGA Card in RX6600 (v3)

Not correct. It can't be the system console, but you can use it as an "X-display" in init 3.

Hope this helps!
