Mirroring Question - size and type

To all,

Please excuse my newbie type question, can I safely mirror an ST336706LC to a ST336704LC? Brain is not engaged today, too much Miami HEAT...

Re: Mirroring Question - size and type

There should be no problem, since both are 36GB disks.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Mirroring Question - size and type

And remember, Chuck, software mirroring via MirrorDisk/UX is done at the lvol level so the disks really don't need to be the same size.

Re: Mirroring Question - size and type

Yes (and no); mirroring does not occur at the disk-to-disk level but rather at the logical volume level. As long as there is sufficient capacity on both physical disks to house a given LVOL's extents then the actual disks don't matter. They disks could be physical disks, array LUN's, LVD SCSI, HVD SCSI, whatever as long as they are members of the same volume group.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Mirroring Question - size and type

I assume you are using Mirror-UX when you say mirroring. You can mirror volumes in case of LVM mirroring and hence technically any size disks can be used - though ideally you should choose the same size - or use the smallest size for primary copy and larger disk for secondary/mirror copy.
Also another thing is the speed of the disks should be same so as not to affect performance - the performance you will get is equal to speed of slowest disk.
If you are taking about hardware raid please mention.
