VxVM to LVM

Way before I came here, there was an initiative to set VxVM as a standard across all systems, Linux, Solaris, AIX, Windows and HP-UX.

It was only fully implemented on HP-UX.

I'm having a great time learning VxVM and its a pretty good tool set.

All HP-UX systems are using rootdg.

Now as part of a lease refresh there is an initiative to go back to a Core OS approach. LVM on Linux, AIX, Solaris, leave Windows out of the initiative.

Problem is the entire production HP-UX environment is VxVM.

Has anyone ever migrated a system from VxVM back to LVM.

Looking for stories, experience, and documentation.

Responses will be liberally rewarded.

Hello SEP,

I have not needed to do such migration
myself, but I know of three methods that
worked for my colleagues (I cannot remember
which OS and VxVM version were used):

a) If, originally, your HP-UX servers used
LVM and then migrated to VxVM, the process
to revert is easy:

# vxvmconvert

Option 3: Rollback from VxVM to LVM

b) If Storage Foundation for Unix/Linux
is installed, use this, for example:

# /etc/vx/bin/vxres_lvmroot -b -v -D c3t1d4

c) Run Ignite backups and change the volume manager type during the recovery.

Option 3: Rollback from VxVM to LVM

Rollback will only work on volume groups immediately after vxvm conversion and if snapshots are kept.

We are an entire lease refresh cycle three years into vxvm and wondering if there is a path back to lvm to net some savings.

Has anyone tried this with a simple Ignite restore? I'm betting that blows up big time.
