FreeWare Menu Utility on Alpha

FreeWare Menu Utility on Alpha

I have searched the archives and not found any hits on this. I apologize in advance if this issue has been addressed in the past.

Is anyone running Joe Meadows's MENU utility from the Freeware CD #2 on an Alpha System? If so, what did you have to do to compile the source on an Alpha server?

I am needing to set up a multi-level menuing system that is database driven based on user name and membership in account groups. I understand that this application is set up to run from flat files, but shouldn't take to much to read a local Rdb database.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: FreeWare Menu Utility on Alpha

FWIW, that C code is going to involve a fair chunk of work to get it to compile and to ensure it operates with stability; if you're interested in more than a cursory port. The current OpenVMS Alpha C compiler is reporting a number compilation errors, and the details of the errors will require some investigation.

The same code is (also) on Freeware V8.

All freeware (v1-v8) as well as the decus archives are online at www.digiater.nl/openvms

Huff,

I agree with you 100%. The C code is going to take a great deal of work with the current compilers. That is why I was checking to see if someone had already done the work.

Re: FreeWare Menu Utility on Alpha

I know why you asked. That was quite obvious from your question and from the errors observed when attempting to build that C code. I've also assumed you've already run various Google searches and have come up empty, too.

It's obviously your decision to implement a new application using this particular design. You'll be among the few folks that are pursuing this particular challenge.

Most folks here will look to use libwww or one of the other available user interface frameworks, and are looking to migrate away from serial connections and away from (save for comparatively advanced tasks) character cell UIs. Which is almost certainly why you've also not located much in the way of free menu tools for OpenVMS, too.

FWIW, you'll probably be able to mask a number of the errors here using /STANDARD=VAXC on your C builds. Standard warning: that masks the errors, and doesn't fix the errors.

Sorry I didn't check the links, that's a shame.
