Is there a good mailserver?

Hello,

I have an AS4100/533 in a rack with 1 GB RAM, VMS 7.3.1, and a Storage Array 450 at home. And a girlfriend, still. I'm sure there is something useful I can do with it. One thing I have in mind is to make a really nice public mail server, without having any commercial interests in mind though.

There are some options out there on other platforms, but after having "played" with Winblows, Linux, Tru64, MacOS/X and VMS in a professional IT environment for many years, I prefer OVMS for just too many reasons.

Stalker has recently released CommunigatePro for OpenVMS. I know the software, which has it's culprits, but its relatively easy to manage. Unfortunately it's probably also the most expensive solution.

I was wondering if someone would know another mail package that could be of interest here, and if possible share some real experience. I have seen that there is WASD, but I have never used it. I would also appreciate other ideas or solutions that may involve e.g. Oracle, etc.

There is a demo version of ComminigatePro which is free. I used to use MadGoat MX (http://www.madgoat.com/) but it depeneds on what you want to do. There are hobbyist licences available for tcpware and multinet which may do what you want http://www.process.com/openvms/hobbyist.html

Depends what you want to do.
If you just use the VMS box as plain (local) server and your clients are Windows or Unix/Linux, you don't need specific extra software and what comes with VMS (inclusing POP, IMAP and SMTP) can do the job. You may have to set it up as relay, but you can close it pretty tight to your domain (see thread http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=849471, I put in a description of SMTP.CONF in one of the answers).
But if you require a bit more than the satndard, MX seems to be a good choice.

How about webmail. Can anyone comment on WASD?

If you mean YAHMAIL - same author, same location for download as the WASD server - I can only advice positively. I use it to access my mail from anywhere. It doesn't look fancy like other hypermail clients used on Windows and Unix, but that's also it's power: is doesn't require a big pipe.
Interacts directly (via CGI scripts and Javascript) with VMSMAIL, has all facilities and more (extraction of MIME attachements) with just a few extraordinarities, some I have not fully investigated yet, but for over 90% of my mail, it is good enough.

It is designed to run on the WASD http-server but I use it with Apache 1.3.
