Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Prem, check the accounting file records /sin also, is there a .DRIFT file ? does the dir/sec values match those on your working systems ? anal/aud/sin give anything ? (acc & anal/aud results obviously depending on your acc+security audit setting)

Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Hi Volker,

in the showing node

> dir *ntp*

Directory SYS$SPECIFIC:[TCPIP$NTP]

TCPIP$NTP.CONF;19 TCPIP$NTP.CONF;18
TCPIP$NTP.CONF;17 TCPIP$NTP.CONF;16 TCPIP$NTP.DRIFT;2785
TCPIP$NTP.ORIG;1 TCPIP$NTP.TEMPLATE;1
TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;170 TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;169
TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;168 TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;167
TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;166 TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;165

in the non-showing node the *ntp*run*.log is not updated ( atleast thats what I see )

and for the drift file there is a strange file

ST24:SYSTEM> dir *ntp* /size/date

Directory SYS$SPECIFIC:[TCPIP$NTP]

NTP009066.;1 1 11-APR-2007 21:28:05.43
NTP009151.;1 1 12-APR-2007 01:00:23.39
NTP00A999.;1 1 14-APR-2007 12:18:49.73
NTP00AC3D.;1 <<<<<< 1 14-APR-2007 16:03:44.71
TCPIP$NTP.CONF;3 9 11-APR-2007 13:40:04.45
TCPIP$NTP.CONF;2 6 30-SEP-2006 14:41:29.25
TCPIP$NTP.DRIFT;66 1 14-APR-2007 15:19:00.29
TCPIP$NTP.TEMPLATE;1
6 11-SEP-2004 11:01:42.67
TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;2
3 14-APR-2007 01:02:57.25
TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG;1
5 13-APR-2007 01:01:40.80

But I exactly do the same in the working node as well, incase if I do not see the NTP process.

Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Prem,

are you using the same version of TCPIP on both nodes ($ TCPIP SHOW VERS) ?

Consider to completely stop and disable NTP and configure it again with @TCPIP$CONFIG.

Maybe there are some strange logicals or symbola on that node, that prevent correct operation of NTP. Even consider to temporarily rename the .CONF file, so see if TCPIP$NTP_1 starts correctly after enabling the NTP service.

Showing Node

> tcpip
TCPIP> show vers

HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V5.4 - ECO 6
on a COMPAQ AlphaServer DS20E 666 MHz running OpenVMS V7.3-2

Non-showing Node
TCPIP> sh ver

HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V5.4 - ECO 6
on a COMPAQ AlphaServer DS20E 666 MHz running OpenVMS V7.3-2

I have already done that couple of times, Let me do a $ tcpip set noservice ntp

Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Have you $ type'd NTP00AC3D.;1 ? is this the ntp .log file ?

Do you set/use any symbols or logicals which supercede dcl commands; anything different on this system than on others in this area ?

Do you save accounting or have a security log file to review for any clues ?

Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Hi John/Volker ,

Maybe this completely unrelated while I was trying to telnet to the NTP server from the non-showing node, I get this error

> telnet 1xx.xx.xx.xxx
%TELNET-E-IVHOST, Invalid or unknown host 1xx.xx.xx.xxx
-TCPIP-W-EAI_AGAIN, temporary failure
>

But the error is not observed from the showing node.

Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Prem,

Can you double check

1. UAF TCPIP$NTP has # full access # network login.

2. Is SYS$SPECIFIC:[TCPIP$NTP]LOGIN.COM; empty or just contain comments ?

Did you find anything in the accounting file ? ($ acc/full/sin/user=tcpip$ntp)

Any security or OPCOM alarms ?

Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Prem, sorry mis read an early post - from your output the NTP service has no Log Options define nor a log file;

To correct run @tcpip$config
3 - server
12 - ntp
3 - stop & disable
12 - ntp
2 - enable & start
exit

$ tcpip sho service ntp/full

Check there are entries against lines;

Log Opts:
File: sys$specific:[tcpip$ntp]tcpip$ntp_run.log

Next check there is a log file and type it up...

Re: NTP Works Fine,But I cannot see it in PS NTP

Not sure what happened to my last post, but the log opts line should have read

Log Opts: Acpt Actv Dactv Conn Error Exit Logi Logo Mdfy Rjct TimO Addr

Doing this will give us a log file to further investigate.
