4.0F upgrade

We are running few of the servers of TRU64 V4.0F systems. We would like to know if it is feasible to upgrade the systems to V4.0G?
Any helpful documentation available then please point us there.

Thanks,
Sac

Re: 4.0F upgrade

It should be feasible to do an update installation from V4.0F to V4.0G. For a starting point, see the installation guide for V4.0G at:

Re: 4.0F upgrade

What all precautions we need to take before continuing with the upgrade. I am a newbie to tru64. One obvious step is to take vdump backup of all the root filesystems.

Thanks,

Another would be to make sure that all the
hardware and software remain supported on
the newer OS.

Having a license which makes the upgrade
legal can also be nice.

Re: 4.0F upgrade

Hi Sac,

If I remember correctly, there's very little difference between 4.0F and 4.0G. The main thing added was better SAN support (boot from SAN I think).

Docs can be found here:

http://h30097.www3.hp.com/docs/pub_page/V40F_DOCS.HTM

http://h30097.www3.hp.com/docs/pub_page/V40G_DOCS/V40G_DOCLIST.HTM

Release notes for 4.0G:

http://h30097.www3.hp.com/docs/base_doc/DOCUMENTATION/V40G_HTML/AQTLMGTE/TITLE.HTM

What are you hoping to achieve by upgrading to 4.0G ? I doubt it will be worth the effort...

Cheers,

Re: 4.0F upgrade

Thats a good point you made. But the senior management is asking for upgrade as they think that it would help them do the clearquest and clearcase upgrade.
Do we system administrators have real choice in such situations ??
Anyways I would summarise the steps I would be taking in upgrade and for clarification will post it right here so that you experts can suggest better.

Thanks so far.

Hi,

Yes. Ask the management why they think you should upgrade, and counter such arguments with facts from the documentation.

I've no idea what clearquest or clearcase is, but I very much doubt that the software will still be supported on 4.0F or 4.0G...

Good luck,

Re: 4.0F upgrade

As Rob said, there is very little visible difference between V4.0F and V4.0G, but the key difference is that they are aimed at different Alpha platforms. In order to assist early-adopters, V4.0G was released to support the Wildfire NUMA Alphas (GS80, GS160, GS320) - Ie. V4.0G is V4.0F plus Wildfire support.

So, if you are running V4.0F now, you cannot be on a NUMA Alpha, therefore you do NOT need V4.0G. G is NOT an upgrade to F.

I doubt that Clearcase really needs to see a 'g' in the version string in order to enable an upgrade.

Re: 4.0F upgrade

I did a search for IBM clearcase tool. The link says that they have discontinued the support for TRU64 V4.0F since clearcase version 5.0. And thats the reason why they must be asking for the upgrade to atleast V4.0G which is next to V4.0F.

At the same time, the link also says that the product now supports TRU64 V5.1A.

So i guess it makes sense to upgrade to V5.1A directly from V4.0F. But then again is it so straightforward or gona be complicated for a newbie like me.

Thanks
