ILO2 online upgrade - ESX 4.1
Am trying to run the online ILO upgrade on ESX4.1U1 on BL460c G1 blade. It fails complaining HP ILO driver is not loaded:
sh CP014256.scexe
FLASH_iLO2 v1.12 for Linux (Aug 31 2009)
Copyright 2009 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
Firmware image: ilo2_205.bin
ERROR: Make sure hp Lights-Out driver is installed and loaded. Also, execute the utility as 'root'. []
I am running as root. hp-ilo is running:
service hp-ilo status
Status of hp-ilo:
hpilo driver is loaded. [ OK ]
Any ideas? This is part of a scripted build process - have a lot of blades to upgrade and don't want to have to fun firmware CD or upload ILO firmware to every ILO manually. This is meant to work and ran fine under ESX 3.5.x
Thanks.

Re: ILO2 online upgrade - ESX 4.1
No, not meant to work and expressly unsupported. Best practice would be to PXE boot and apply this as part of your build process before installing ESX.

Re: ILO2 online upgrade - ESX 4.1
You can actually upgrade all of the ilo's at once from the OA's Command Line Interface.
Just an idea, I know it does not replace your scripted method.

Re: ILO2 online upgrade - ESX 4.1
Hi David,
Can you point me to anything that says this is unsupported? I obtained the file via the HP Support & Drivers website - searched for bl460c, selected VMware ESX/ESXi 4.1 as the O/S, followed the link to
* RECOMMENDED * Firmware CD Supplemental Update / Online ROM Flash Component for Linux - HP Integrated Lights-Out 2
The release notes include ESX 4.1 as a supported O/S.
