Check Raid consistency.

Hello,

Sorry, maybe it's a stupid question but I can't find how to check raid consistency on my proliant ML370 G4. I'm running Windows 2003 SP2 R2.

If possible I want to have the command in order to make a scheduled job.

I know these commands on dell systems so maybe it will helps you if i give them in order to understand what I want.

Dell's commands are:
omconfig storage vdisk action=checkconsistency controller=1 vdisk=0
or
amcli.exe /c1

Thanks in advance for your help !

Alex.

Re: Check Raid consistency.

Alex,

the HP SmartArray controller does a continious parity check of it's arrays, you cannot schedule it or disable it. It is also referred to as 'surface scan'.

After an array is created for the first time, you will see a entry in the Windows System.evt logfile after a while that the initialization is completed but further consistency checks or also called 'surface scans' do not generate any log entries anymore.

You could use the ADU report (Array Diagnostic Utility) to see how many times the raid array /logical drive has been through a complete surface scan.

The ADU utility is downloadable from hp.com
i.e. here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=1132643&prodNameId=378439&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-3dea01fc876343d8990f65ba44

See also page 71 of the manual

http://bizsupport.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00729544/c00729544.pdf

"Surface scan analysis is an automatic background process that ensures that you can recover data if a
drive failure occurs. The scanning process checks physical drives in fault-tolerant logical drives for bad
sectors, and in RAID 5 or RAID 6 (ADG) configurations, it also verifies the consistency of parity data."

Dell uses another raid controller that they buy from a vendor and HP used to have in the old days on the Netservers such controllers where you could schedule it.
Bottom line is with the SmartArray controller, you are in good shape and it is all done for you automatically in firmware, if there are problems with the consistency it will be logged in the Windows log files and alerts will be generated if you monitor them via HP SIM i.e.
