DL360 G4p

I wish to enable 64bit support on our system but only see a setting for virtualization in the Bios. I updated the bios to the most recent bios dated 2007.

I'm attempting to run a 64bit VM and I'm getting a message that 64bit OS are not supported.

I have a single Xeon 3ghz processor with a P54 bios.

Does this system support 64bit OS's and where do I set the value for this support.

Re: DL360 G4p

David,

Yes it supports 64-bit OS, but it might depend upon the server configuration xxxxxx-xxx model number system board and CPU.

See the quickspec, it doesn't indicate that the 3.0Ghz single core is 64-bit, but you'll need the system board and CPU part numbers to be sure.

2.8 GHz Dual-core Intel® Xeon⠢ processors are now available with the powerful HP ProLiant DL360 G4p Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) model. Offering up to a 50% performance increase over single-core processors, the Dual-core Intel Xeon offers a 2x2MB L2 cache and 64-bit capability.

3.8 GHz Intel® Xeon⠢ processors are available now available with robust HP ProLiant DL360 G4p SCSI and SAS models and includes 2MB L2 cache and 64-bit support.

Introducing Xeonâ ¢ 3.0 GHz low voltage processor for performance per watt optimization in dense server environments.

Once you have the server part number you can see which parts are 64-bit here:

W2K3 64-bit has drivers for this system, so 64-bit support is implied with the right processors.

Re: DL360 G4p

OK

my system is 382147-405 and
CPU is 380327-L21 - Intel X3.0GHz/800-2MB DL360G4 FIO processor

This system was purchased in 2005 so doubt supports 64bit but still holding out hope.

I'm still unable to tell from the links if this CPU supports 64bit. Also, where specifically would I see in bios if it did support 64bit.

Re: DL360 G4p

Hi David,

That system number doesn't show a complete BOM in partsurfer (generic SCSI platform chassis), so you'll need to look at the physical system motherboard part number or get the system serial number and plug it into the Warranty Check (<--over on the left pane) tool and see what comes up.

The CPU part number you gave is a kit, but some of the HP docs indicate that it *should* support 64-bit extensions,if it is an Irwindale processor.

See this document that outlines W2K3 x64 support requirements:

http://www.hp.com/sbso/solutions/microsoft/c00235042.pdf

Make sure ALL the firmware components are at the latest versions.

You might check with VMware to make sure they are supporting the platform.

Re: DL360 G4p

OK, I pulled the CPU and didn't want to dismount it from the heatsink. It indicates on the tag that its replacement is 381801-001. Research on this part number indicates its an Irwindale CPU which supports 64bit. NOW, when I go into the Bios there is is no setup for VT support in the advanced options section. Recommendations other then a finding another system.

Re: DL360 G4p

I don't believe the G4p is VT capable.

Re: DL360 G4p

David,

According to Quickspecs, these are the supported O/S platforms:

OS Support
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Novell NetWare
Linux (Red Hat, SuSE, UnitedLinux)
Solaris
****VMware Virtualization Software****

NOTE: SAS, SCSI and SATA models may have different OS support. Please see OS Support Matrix.
NOTE: For a more complete and up-to-date listing of supported OSs and versions, please visit our OS Support Matrix page at: http://www.hp.com/go/supportos.
NOTE: For more complete and up-to-date information on how to buy server operating systems from HP please visit the OS product site at: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/software/OEM.html
NOTE: For a listing of the latest drivers available for the HP ProLiant DL360, please see: http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/index.html.
NOTE: For a more complete and up-to-date information on Linux support, please visit HP Linux Web site at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/hpLinuxcert.html.
NOTE: For more information on HP's Certified and Supported ProLiant Servers, please visit the VMware Server Support Matrix at: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/software/vmware/hpvmwarecert.html.

Again it depends upon your exact G4p configuration. If the BIOS isn't showing the options, then it probably doestn't meet the G4p requirements for VT. Run the SmartStart diags and see what the configuration indicates.

Re: DL360 G4p

Hello David,

Although a processor is 64bit it may not support 64bit guest OS when running virtualization. If it is VMWare you are trying to use you can only install 64bit guest OS if the installed processors support Intel VT technology. I've run VMWare ESXi 3.5, 4.0 and now 4.1 on my DL360 G4 but it only supports 32bit guest OS.

I am looking to purchase an inexpensive used DL series server that supports the Intel VT technology but having trouble finding one that is less than $1000.

Intel has a great page that shows all their Xeon processors with detailed specs like if it supports VT. I found this to be very helpful.
http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=594

In the Xeon family pretty much if it is a dual or higher core processor is supports VT. From the list I can see only 1 dual core that does not have VT. That is the 2.8GHz with 4MB cache and 800FSB. Most unfortunate, I think that is the same dual core processor in the DL360 G4p server which I was hoping to purchase and run 64bit guest OS on for myself.

All the specs you want to know about the DL360 G4p are at:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12166_div/12166_div.html

You will see that the 2.8GHz processor is dual core. But if it is the same processor on the Intel list there is no VT support.

If you happen to purchase an inexpensive HP server with VT support, please share the model with me.

Best of luck,
Greg
