according the specs :

are supported from the server...

Great i looked at quickspec earlier but i wanted to double check.I have checked that
2 slots are x8 and one is x4 do theses work
as they should do in a x8 if it is a x4 card.

I have replaced the motherboard & riser card today.I am waiting on the processor heatsinks
which i will in the morning.

So before i take the plunge on the dead Server
i just wanted to make sure this was not caused
by the cards.

Replaced M/B and riser card cage this has fixed the problem.Thank you for all you help.

Glad to hear this...maybe it was the systemboard only, but the results are important...
