Ethernet stops responding

Having continuous problems with the Ethernet NIC under Linux. Having tried both Red Hat and Gentoo 1.2, and also tried the latest Compaq drivers, the latest drivers from Donald Becker, and the latest official Linux drivers from Intel.

I have attempted to deactivate the sleep functions of the NIC and also deactivated the 'CPU Cycle Saver' functions without a change in problems experienced.

I have also attempted upgrading the system BIOS, RAID firmware, and the IRQ of the onboard Ethernet NIC without success.

Problem summary: The NIC will 'fall asleep', especially during idle periods, and stop responding to any network traffic. Usually it will 'wake up' upon receiving frames, often it will not - even refusing to respond to pings.

This is problem is a serious blocker that prevents us from putting the server into production use.
