Memory Issue

For a server (such as DL 380) with single/multiple 32 bit CPUs, the memory will be subject to the 4 GB limit.

But from the online configuration of the DL 380 on the HP's sale web site, it also offers memory which is greater than 4 GB such as 8 GB RAM.

1) Does anyone know how is the 4 GB barrier overcome if I select 8 GB?

2) Will the PAE feature/mode be enabled on 32-bit systems, in order to allocate > 4 GB RAM?

Thanks

Re: Memory Issue

You can use more than 4GB with PAE on 32-bit systems. Your OS must support this mode. Also process cannot get more than 4GB his own address space (in windows no more than 3 GB even with /3GB switch). But if you use multiple processes you can use all of the memory.

Re: Memory Issue

Scott, I assume you mean DL380 G4.
DL380 G4 have CPU's with x64 support, therefore you can use windows 2003 x64 version (even standard edition of windows 2003 x64 support up to 32Gb) and use all memory without PAE switch. Note that PAE mode is performance penalty for some applications. AFAIK, Windows 2003 x64 edition price is same as windows 2003 x32 edition.

Re: Memory Issue

Hi Scott,

Windows 2000/2003 standard won't support more than 4GB. you have to use the PAE enabling for using more than 4 GB

Windows 2003 standard (also as XP SP2) can use /PAE switch.
