Processor Performance

I have a database reporting application that is CPU bound when run in the foreground on a Proliant 1600/450. I would like to improve the performance of the server when this application is running. Would I be better off adding a second 450 mhz processor or replacing my existing processor with a 600 mhz PIII processor? The system has 320 MB and a RAID disk configuration. The system appears to rarely page.

Re: Processor Performance

Is the application multiprocessor aware? If so, a second CPU would probably be best.

Re: Processor Performance

The data base application is written in Visual Fox Pro. It will soon be modified to use Micro soft SOL. I am not aware that applications written in Visual Fox Pro are multiprocessor aware but I do expect that Micro soft SOL is.

Re: Processor Performance

SQL is most definitely a MP aware application... It will benefit a great deal from multiple processors, but is also a bit of a "memory hog" so make sure you have enough to support what you intend to use it for.
