RAID Controller SmartArray 642 -> 6402
anybody knows, if it is possible to change from smart-array 642 to 6402 without rebuildung the array(s). I just want to move the harddisks from a 642 controller to a 6402 without data loss.
Regards,
Joerg

The disk's can be swapped to another ID.
If they are all OK.
But if you maintain the posistion, then absolutely sure.
Do ensure that the 6400 got same or newer FW than the 642.

Re: RAID Controller SmartArray 642 -> 6402
I once had a DL360G4 that would not boot when the disk were swapped. Only two disks in a 360G4 but basically the same controller and disks.

Re: RAID Controller SmartArray 642 -> 6402
Did you only move 1 disk, or both?
If you only move 1 and put it in the other posistion, then it will lockup.
Becaurse you breake the mirror, it will expect to get a new disk insertet in the posistion for the missing disk, but now you just put the other disk in there's.
That will mess it up.
Still, you just move the disk to the correct posistion and it will work.
If you move both disk's and shuffel them them, it will boot.
I do totally agree, that you should not take any charnces with machines in production.
