Upgrade Xeon E5430 Processors in DL360 G5 possible?
We have a number of servers that are currently running dual core 5120 CPU's and we want to upgrade them to quad cores. These replacement CPU's are boxed Intel chips but were not purchased from HP and I assumed I could use them. Am I wrong?
I've noticed that the latest BIOS promises support for the 5200 and 5400 processors so have installed this new BIOS.
However, with the new procs installed, the server fails to boot with an error message "Unsupported Processor Detected".
Any ideas?

Re: Upgrade Xeon E5430 Processors in DL360 G5 possible?
hi
the point HP has different System Board for different Processors
so you got initially 5120s which means you got the SB = 412199-001 which supports 50xx and 51xx
ans since you got dual core processor
you need to hav the other system Bord to support those new Procs
check information below, page 29
http://bizsupport.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00710376/c00710376.pdf
a) System board with processor cage supporting Intel├В┬о Xeon├В┬о
50xx and 51xx processors
412199-001
b) System board with processor cage supporting Intel├В┬о Xeon├В┬о
52xx, 53xx, and 54xx processors*
436066-001
so you have to replace your System Boards to support these new processors basically it's now your System Board it's your Hardware

Re: Upgrade Xeon E5430 Processors in DL360 G5 possible?
Hi,
Its all depends upon boards supported or not.
First we have to deep study about technical specification of CPU as well as existing Board.
If both are compatable then it will support including BUS speed. Otherwise it will not.
But here in your Case its not supporting.
I want to tell you One more thing some time board supports one or two mode with the setting of JUMPER.
Regards,
Gokul Chandola

There is always some scope for improvment.

Re: Upgrade Xeon E5430 Processors in DL360 G5 possible?
is there a way (via software) to identify the part number of the SB with out openning the server?
