Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
Henk,
This is not actually a HP moderated forum. The HP people that are on here are not really assigned to either help or respond to messages. We do it because we want to !
Anyhow, is the message you are getting like this (attached) ....
I am wondering whether there is a specific problem with certain onboard chipsets on some machines... ??
cheers

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
As info, if you have purchased Stomp Backup MyPC v4.71, the upgrade to 4.81 is free from their site.
http://www.stompinc.com/support/downloads.phtml?stp
Not sure what this 'Bump' is you guys were talking about.
I have the same program and as I have posted earlier in this thread, I was successful with my external Colorado Travan 14gb by using the Veritas driver, NOT the HP.

Gary,
Back Up My Pc = BUMP for short !
Am I correct in understanding that you are using the old win2000 driver to get your external device working in XP ? It works in some instances and not in others.
cheers

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
I am really confused by this thread. Lucky for me, I have no WinXP systems to support just yet.
In particular, Gary Combs has a post (Aug 10, 2002) that states that his HP Colorado 14GBe is working with the Veritas drivers that come with Backup MyPC rather than with the HP drivers.
In my understanding, Backup MyPC does not come with any drivers. Sure, it supports many devices but one must have installed device drivers obtained in some other manner. Whether that be native Windows drivers or HP drivers, etc.
Can anyone make this clear for me?

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
You may be right. It has been too long since I installed program to remember. I do know that in Device manager, there are references to 2 drivers.
drvmcdb.sys - Veritas (not certified by MS)
qic157.sys - MS Certified driver.
Guess this does not exactly answer your concern but I have always used Veritas software for backups and on our servers at work, I am certain that Veritas Backup Exec DOES have its own drivers. I can't say for certain that Backup MyPC does or does not though.

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
I upgraded from Windows NT to Windows 2000, and I only had Colorado Backup II 7.0, which worked great under NT, but won't install under Windows 2000.
I went out and bought BUMP (Backup MyPC). Now, it won't read my NT tapes. I was able to append a new backup to an existing tape. But for reading, it does start reading the tapes when I do "Device View", but after about 30 minutes, I get an error. I called Stomp and they told me the drive is not supported, but it *might* be supported in December.
I'd like to get a copy of Colorado Backup II 9.0 or 9.1, which will work under Windows 2000. But nobody at HP will give it to me. I'll take it in unsupported mode! Otherwise, I have a useless drive and lots of useless tapes!
Anyone willing to pass me a Zipped installer for CB II 9.0 or 9.1??

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
It appears that you can unofficially download Colorado backup software here (someeone posted this up a number of weeks ago). HP can no longer distribute this software:
http://www.rountree-inc.com/downloads.html
I am interested to here that Veritas are saying that they don't support the colorado drives. I will get onto them about that; they are supposed to be working with us 8-)

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
I must apologise if I gave you a wrong impression about what I expected from this forum. I know this is not a moderated forum. I did not ???require??? a reaction on my postings. Just not getting any reaction at all (neither from HP guys like you, nor from any other forum reader) made me believe that I was the only one experiencing this problem. All the reason more to be thankful for getting reactions now, yours in particular.
Yes, the message as displayed in the attachment is what I get. If the problem is chipset related there must be an awful lot of system experiencing this problem. I use a 1.7 GHz P4 with an Intel 850 RAMBUS based MSI 6523 (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=91&MODEL=MS-6523).
But at work I use various Compaq Deskpro P3 systems (with accompanying Intel chipsets). As said before with W2k on those systems everything works fine, with WXP nothing works at all (the unit is always identified correctly).
Thanks once more for responding to my postings.

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
Here in Europe we have to buy Veritas from Orlogix in Ireland. The 4.81 upgrade costs ??? 29.99 (about $ 30). That is not much if it works but I have already paid about $ 80 for the upgrade from CBII to 4.71 and that did not work either. However they offer a 30-days trial version with I will try as soon as possible.

I guess I don't understand something. You can't access the Stompinc.com website and d/l the upgrade from your country? If not, and your email account can handle an 8MB zipped file, I will be happy to send you the free upgrade that I downloaded yesterday from Stomp. Let me know...

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
Thanks for the pointer.
I did that download and installed CBII 9.1. I already had the 2.08 driver installed.
I am still getting errors when trying to restore from the tapes I made under NT with CBII 7.0. Using "Device View", I get the list of backup sets on the media and click a few to look at. After a while, I get the message:
An error occurred while retrieving the backup directory.
A seek error occurred while using this media. (07-07-23-01-3B00)
Note that I'm not sure that the downloads you pointed me to are installing the right drivers that work with Windows 2000 Pro. The main installer in that download fails, but there is a separate installer in there that installs CBII 9.1 and it works fine. Are the drivers on HP's site the ones to use with CBII 9.1??
Is there a way to verify *exactly* what drivers are to be installed so that CB II 9.1 works?
Finally, if you carefully look at Stomp's site, you'll see that the external versions of the HP Colorado drives are not in the supported device list for BUMP.
Thanks very much for your responses!

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
I am sorry but Stompinc.com explicitly states that ???This update is for all Stomp Backup MyPC versions.??? And mine is Orlogix Backup MyPC. An upgrade from that version costs $ 29.00 (Stomp ESD $ 29.00 download lists Orlogixs version as eligible).
But I do have the 30 days free trial download from Orlogix so I will give it a try.

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
I have followed this thread very closely, since I own a 14GB external Colorado drive, which used to sit idly beside my PC since I upgraded to XP.
After reading some of the messages in here, I decided to try a new experiment:
* installed BackupMyPC (BUMP) 4.81 demo version
* removed all previous entries for epatap2k.drv (I had installed the win2kdrivers package) from the registry
*re-detected the drive - now accepted installation of unsigned drivers
Now: incredibly backup and restore using BUMP did work correctly!
The drivers currently installed are:
drvmcdb.sys 3.21.25a by VERITAS
qic157.sys 5.1.2600.0 (Microsoft)
I have yet to try a restart (previously, a restart with active tape drive resulted in a crash), but at least, I managed one complete backup and restore!
I'll report back on the restart issue...

Torsten Ecke

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
Unfortunately, the restart problems remain - I keep getting blue screens when restarting while the drive is active. The only solution is unplugging the power during startup and re-plugging power after the bootup is complete. Then, I need to re-detect the tape drive. The backup still seems to work.
So, I'll run some more tests, but, so far, at least I can back up - although the process is not really convenient...
Cheers,

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
This may be overkill or unnecessary, but, if it were me, and you have a good backup of your data files, I would consider formatting your harddrive and reinstalling XP (along with SP1 which was released this week). I would then install BUMP, then just the HP driver that detects the parallel port SCM Pport Atapi device, and NOT the HP tape device driver. (This device falls under the 'System' category in device manager).
The hardware will then be detected and it will choose the QIC driver and not he HP one that is not even on the system. I followed this procedure as outlined in my earlier post and have not had one problem with scheduled backups, reboots, etc.

Here it is:

June 29, 2002 06:07 AM GMT [ N/A: Question Author ]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alex,
I wrote email to: Colorado_Support
P.S. Not thrilled with idea of having to buy new software . . .
>Hello,
Thank you for contacting the Storage, Services, and Support Organization
of the New HP.
You will require a software upgrade to be functional on Windows XP.
Colorado backup software has been discontinued as of October 31, 2001.
So in order to get the software, you actually have to purchase the
upgrade or full version provided and supported by Veritas. You can
download the trial version from:
http://www.stompinc.com/trial/index.html
[Or]
Get it by calling their distributor Stomp at 1-866-713-7700. Software
name is Backup My PC ver. 4.71 and is compatible with Windows NT, 98,
ME, 2000 and XP. And as being an existing HP customer and if you have
the version of CBII on CD, you will get the upgrade at discounted price
of $29 for download and $39 if you want it on a CD. Actual price of the
software is $99
You will also need the drivers for the tape drive to be seen by OS.
There is no shuttle port driver available yet to enable external
Colorado devices to function in Windows XP. Drivers will be available
soon to be downloaded of the HP's website and also from
www.shuttletech.com
But there is workaround for that until the drivers are available. The
Windows 2000 shuttle port drives will work within Windows XP, although
their use is unsupported and not recommended. In order to download and
install the drivers, follow the steps given below:
1. Log on to www.hp.com
2. Click on drivers.
3. In the search box type Colorado 14gb and press enter.
4. Click on the drivers and downloads beside 14gb external.
5. Then you click on Windows 2000.
6. From here you can download the driver file win2kdrivers.exe
7. It is a self-extracting zip file, double click the icon to unzip it
and unzip to a blank floppy (Type the location A:\).
8. After that Right click on My Computer, click properties.
9. Click on Hardware tab and the access device manager by clicking it.
10. The external Colorado product will be initially identified as
something like VID 04E6 PID_80000002, under Other Devices.
11. Select it and then select the Driver tab. Select the Update Driver
button and then identify the location of the drivers (usually on your
floppy disk)
12. The installation process is now straightforward and will not require
a restart.
If you need further assistance, please use the reply feature to include
all previous correspondence because we have several technicians
answering messages.
Thank you,
Ravinder R.

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
For some peace of mind, I have to ask directly.
I have CB II 9.0 running on a Win2K system. I also have CB9.1 installation zip but have not deployed it. When I migrated to Win2K the installation did not work properly; I managed to force the installation. The backup system now works great.
I may need to migrate OSes to WinXP Pro. After my first experience with Win2K, my impulse is to overlay XP Pro over my current installation so that registry gets absorbed - including the settings for the tape drive.
With all the tests that have been done (who am I to doubt %-)), do I have a chance of success in retaining my backup tape ? Should I upgrade to 9.1, first, after or never ?
Thanks in advance,
Charly

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
Charly,
Nothing you can do is currently guaranteed to mke your drive work with XP.
Some people have somehow managed to get internals working with colorado backup (which BTW shouldn't work with XP) by 'overlaying' XP.
I can, however, report some progress with fixing the external device issues.

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
Thanks for the info so far. I am having the WinXP problem with an HP 20GB INTERNAL drive. I also have a problem in that the tape drive is recognized by device manager, but it shows no resources (IRQ and I/O) being used, so I can't upgrade the firmware using the DOS workaround, as it requires this info. Any ideas?

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
I answered (part of) my own question. I realized I had my tape on the primary IDE chain, and it uses different IRQ and I/O addresses from the secondary chain (obviously). I changed the correct entries in the .ini file, and the DOS firmware update worked. By the way, make sure you edit the line that says "deviceid=colorado 14 gb" to read 20gb, if you have the 20 - I know, intuitive, but easy to miss. The only problem now, is that I still have the problem (under WinXP Pro) with the error message O5-0E-23-01-0524. This is a firmware problem, per the Dex interpretation chart on the HP site, and I have upgraded the firmware. So, and I know you can all see this one coming, why don't BUMP or the native WinXP b/u utility work (both give the same error message listed above)? Sorry for the long post, but I just had some pizza and a Coke, and I have to burn off the calories doing something, right?! Thanks.

Today I reinstalled my HP Colorado 8GBi. Nothing changed: Windows XP still regognises the device but still doesn't see a tape. I then installed BUMP 4.81. And I am sorry to say: that didn't change a thing either.
Attached the error message I get from BUMP and a driver listing from Device Managment (partly in Dutch but the screen dump is of a very common one so I hope you'll understand).

Re: HP response - Colorados and XP
A review of the drive's properties (under device manager) reveals the following. The driver installed is Microsoft's qic157, which should be ok based on previous posts. Under the Tape Drive Parameters Tab, the Compression Capable and Compression Enabled items both are set to FALSE and there is no way for me to change these settings.
How can I get my drive to store compressed data?
