Good day everoyne,
We are currently using an HP 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader with LTO Ultrium 3 800GB Tapes.
Is it possible for us to just switch to LTO Ultrium 5 3200GB Tapes or is this impossible due to the different drive technology?
Thank you for your advice,
Kind Regards
P.S. This thread has been moved from Tape Backup (Small and Medium Business) to Tape Libraries and Drives. - Hp forum Moderator

SolutionYou probably can't use the LTO Ultrium 5 3200GB tapes. It depends on the type of drive in your autoloader.
Since you say you are using LTO Ultrium 3 800GB tapes I think it is likely that you have an LTO Ultrium 3 tape drive and the 800GB tapes are the largest capacity tapes that the LTO-3 tape drive can use.
To use the LTO Ultrium 5 tapes you have to have an LTO-5 or LTO-6 tape drive.
There is a drive upgrade kit that can be used with the 1/8 G2 Autoloader to replace an LTO-3 tape drive with an LTO-5 or LTO-6 drive. The drive upgrade kit is only listed for the MSL2024 family though. The 1/8 G2 doesn't support adding a drive so the upgrade kits weren't associated with the 1/8 B2 but all of the MSL 2024 drive upgrade kits are compatible with the 1/8 G2. They completely replace the drive in the autoloader.
