Accessing HP KVM CAT5 0x1x8 Server Console Switch (336044-B21)
Hello everyone.
I have received this switch and I am trying to configure it. I am fairly new in configuring switches.
So far I have downloaded the HP IP Console Switch Software for Windows
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/22703.html
I used a laptop with a serial cable in the switches serial port and the laptop's serial port.
Now I do not know if this switch has an IP addresses to it or whatnot. The only thing I can think of is doing a discover on the switch. However, I can not even narrow down the scan because I don't know the range of IPs that it would have been assigned.
So basicly my question is,Is there a quicker way of seeing the configuration of this switch or configuring it myself. When I do a File - New - Console Switch. I only have the option for IP Console Switch 1x1x16 or IP Console Switch 3x1x16.
But all I have is a 0x1x8 Server Console Switch .
I spoke to my friend and he asked me if this switch was even IP addressable. According to the name of the switch I would assume that it isnt seeing how it is named KVM CAT5 #x#x#.
Anyhow, any help what so ever will be greatly appreciated :)

That particular switch is not IP addressable. They're called KVM CAT5 as they use regular CAT5e cabling to connect to the adapters.
So for this KVM switch, you've got local console access only.

Re: Accessing HP KVM CAT5 0x1x8 Server Console Switch (336044-B21)
Ok, So the software I had downloaded was for IP switches. So that won't be any good for me.
So now I know that I can use a CAT5 cable. I have my laptop that I would be able to use to communicate with the switch. However, I am wondering if there exists some software I should be using to configure this switch. If not how does one communicate with the switch once the cat5 is hooked in.
Also should I be plugging my cat5 cable in port 8 of the switch or does it matter?
Thanks for the help so far :)

There's not that much controlling of the switch that can be done. You normally plug a keyboard mouse and monitor into the designated ports, and from there locally you can control the clients which are connected to the CAT5 ports.
