Alternatives to CDE

Alternatives to CDE

I use reflections to establish x-window sessions on HP-UX 11.11.
With HP-UX 11.31, this is not working because CDE is not installed by default. If I do not want to install CDE, are there any alternatives that HP recommends? Or if you use something else that works and that you recommend to establish an x-windows connection to HP-UX 11.31?

Thanks.

Re: Alternatives to CDE

It is not very clear of your question, but I think Xming might work for you.

Assuming you use Putty to connect to your server, you need to go to ssh -> X11 and set up "Enable X11 forwarding".

Start your Xming in your local work station.

ssh to your server and you can build an X session from your server to your local work station. The DISPLAY is already setup when you login to the server and you don't need to worry about it either.

Re: Alternatives to CDE

I just want to establish an x-window session so I can install oracle and SAP.
Do I need to install Xming on the HP-UX server? where do I get XMING from?
thanks.

Re: Alternatives to CDE

Hi:

You install 'xming' on your PC. You get fetch it from here:

Re: Alternatives to CDE

You can down load xming from:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/xming/

You only need to install it in your local work station, not in your hp-ux server.

"It is not very clear of your question, but I think Xming might work for you."

I didn't see anything unclear. XMing has nothing to do with it, as that's the PC end of things, and her already uses Reflections.

He said CDE doesn't install by default (which is true) and is looking for alternatives, as he doesn't want it install CDE.

At one time, HP had Gnome available (from Ximian I think), but noted it wasn't suitable for production / high availablity systems as it had limited support.

I suppose you could try porting Konqueror from source with Xfree or some such....

Or just install CDE. Not sure why the reluctance to do so?

Re: Alternatives to CDE

If CDE isn't installed, install it.

Where is the problem?

Hope this helps!

Re: Alternatives to CDE

Alex...that's the link where I found:

"Note: This release supports PA-RISC and Itanium-based systems running on of the following
operating system releases.

HP-UX 11.0

HP-UX 11i

HP-UX 11i v1.6

------followed by--------------------------

This release is intended to provide availability of Ximian GNOME 1.4 on HP-UX. This product is not supported, and therefore it is not recommended for mission-critical or production environments.

You should not expect the same level of stability and functionality that you would expect from a production release. Here are some points to keep in mind when evaluating this release of Ximian GNOME for HP-UX.

You are speaking about two separate things. Either CDE or Reflection, these two are for the same purpose - to visualize graphic.

>If I do not want to install CDE, are there any alternatives that HP recommends?

For CDE, Gnome could be an alternative as others mentioned, but not for a productive environment.

For establishing an X _connection_ remotely you could use either

Reflection
or
putty with X-forwarding and Xming

Re: Alternatives to CDE

mwm (Motif Window Manager) is probably still included in even the most basic installations, check if /usr/bin/X11/mwm is available. Don't mess with XDMCP, just configure your X Server to connect through SSH and run mwm directly. You can also try twm (Tab Window Manage) but this one is hard core.

mwm is definitely no-frills in 2009 standards but I like it, it's as simple as a window manager can get and it has its charm. :)

Good luck

Re: Alternatives to CDE

I doubt that MWM / TWM *are* installed...as I doubt that the underlying X-Windows software for the server has been installed at this point.

Ximian Gnome is an alternate to CDE. See the documnetation on installation and steps to configure at

Re: Alternatives to CDE

Well CDE is not installed here, when I ignite my 11.31 systems I just install everything that comes by default, but package X11 is included and it comes with mwm. If an xterm is available, so should be mwm.

Re: Alternatives to CDE

You don't need x11 to run graphical applications, from the question relating to reflections and "If I do not want to install CDE" I think he hasn't got it installed.
But he could use putty with port forwarding, and Xming.

Re: Alternatives to CDE

Yes, I think the combination of Putty and Xming is the simplest way to get xwindow to local station. Both of them are free and both of them are reliable.

I mean putty with X forwarding. :O

here is how you can set X forward in putty:

Re: Alternatives to CDE

If you are looking for a GUI desktop then either install CDE or Ximian gnome. I know CDE is on the 11iv3 install cd. Gnome may have only been there for 11iv2.

Re: Alternatives to CDE

The way I have it working right now is to do the following:

-Start reflection on the windows PC
-ssh to the HP-UX 11.31 server
-define the DISPLAY variable as follows:
export DISPLAY=##.##.##.##:0.0 where ##.##.##.## is the ip address of the pc running MS-Windows.
-start xterm as follows:
xterm&

This is working for me. The critical requirement here is the emulating software which Reflections, Exceed,.....
CDE is not required!

If you have more to add, please do so others can benefit.

Thanks!

Re: Alternatives to CDE

AFAIK forwarding X sets a pretty overhead on top of the already-slow ssh connection. If you are using it locally it's ok but trough a slow network the performance could be annoying. On Linux I am using VNC instead of directly forwarding X, this is much faster. But for that, you should have an X server installed directly on the machine, and an additional VNC server. But I don't have any specific experience with VNC on HP-UX.

Re: Alternatives to CDE

I was not able to get ssh working without having a reflection session running on my desktop. Was anybody able to do it with any other emulating software running on their desktops? I have HP-UX 11.31.
