Please change nsswitch.conf on both the hosts as

hosts: files [NOTFOUND=return UNAVAIL=continue TRYAGAIN=return dns [NOTFOUND=continue UNAVAIL=continue TRYAGAIN=continue]

I am telling you to do above setting to look to the /etc/hosts first and then go for DNS

You could also check that on the DNS server, an alias is also added

hostname.domainname hostname

The above three should be there

I think the problem maybe the reverse lookup of the sending server on the destination server. This is used when checking if the server is allowsd to remsh / rcp (in .rhosts) The reverse lookup must match and entry in this file on the destination.
