Hi,

the automount maps are for the clinet only - the server, which exports filesystems, will not read them (whether they are NIS managed or not) for exporting purposes.
You may have a NFS-server, which doesn't use NIS at all, but all clients use NIS.

NIS is valuable for a NFS server NTHL:
Normally there are access restrictions for IP adresses, hostnames, netgroups and (may be) a mapping of usernames. These tasks can play well with NIS.
