Solution
x=displaynumber y=screennumber
display = collection of monitors that share a common keyboard & pointer. see man X for more details.
screen number = in the case of more than one monitor each has its own set of windows,each screen is assigned a screen number . see man X for further details.

in addition to the previous reply...different applications also use different y (screen) values, eg. Secure shell uses 10 (or 11 on some versions - DISPLAY=

Hi,
in addition to Stefan: I think you mean not the y (screen) but the x (display) number (first value after the IP).
In Secure Shell the value for display (e.g. 10 or 11) can be configured in the sshd config file with the parameter X11DisplayOffset.
