setting permissions to file /usr/lib/dld.sl

Sir,
I tried to modify the permissions of the file /usr/lib/dld.sl which used to be originally as -r--r--r-- 1 bin bin and now ended up getting the error "crt0: ERROR: mmap failed for dld.sl (text) errno:000000013" when I try to look at the file with ls.
Tried chmod 555 /usr/lib/dld.sl
Even for that I get the same error. I am not sure what impact this will have on the system and how can I fix it?.
Please advise.

Hi:

Error 13 = permission error.

You need 'dld.sl' to have read/execute permissions to everyone (555). You also need these permissions on the '/usr' and '/usr/lib' directories that house it.

This is the dynamic loader for shared libraries and outside of single-user mode it is used ubiquitously!!!

...and since you have already slammed the door on your own fingers, use :

# /sbin/chmod 555 /usr/lib/dld.sl

...to modify the permissions.

Hi Raj,

It sounds weird, I don't understand why you are getting that behavior, don't you have a backup?, in this case the best option is restore the original file, then try again, probably something bad happened when you were trying to change the file permissions.

Another thing is that maybe the OS is not patched correctly.

A backup will do little good since your "restore" programs probably use dld.sl.
Reinstalling a dld.sl patch would restore the bits.

Best not to fiddle with dld.sl permissions and surely never use chmod -R in system directories.
