Error 1004 SCSI GROSS ERROR

Help please. Compaq ML server with u3 scsi controller. correct cable & termination. scsi ID's set as per the manual. Latest flash image for the library. Error occurs on the front panel of the TL891 when you power up the server & the scsi controller checks the bus. Tried new everything - including a new TL891 DLX (reported old unit as DOA - having logged a fault with Compaq) & fault still present. URGENT help required on this please!!
