Re: Windows Server2003 32bit & SQL Server 2005 SP2 AMD CPU
If I understand this article any cpu deviating from the max cpu speed can give this problem, since a millionth of a second (microsecond) by it's very nature is very high resolution time.
If performance measurements on this timescale are important then you should also check the server's BIOS and BIOS settings are the latest and gretest.
Furthermore de-install any adaptive power/fan control. Usually when a server has nothing to do the cpu will slow down it's speeed (speedstep) to conserve power, become cooler and thus require less cooling. (Lower the fan speeds).
A timely question is also what type of server it is - with many cpu's it is not sure that all are being used by SQL, and therefore some will possibly have nothing to do and slow down.
Power usage and cooling are increasingly becoming important and integral to many server designs, so expect new servers to be more aggressive with respect to power saving than older models.
Cheers,
Rune
