New SA1100 and network

OK, I have a simple network right now that I am trying to get my SA1100 to work on. It consists of a PC (Windows 2000 Pro), a switch/hub, DSL link, and my SA1100. I have hooked up my server, given it an IP address. All seems well, except I cannot seem to ping the server, Use windows explorer to get into the server nothing. Network cables are good, All the lights are on....

Any suggestions at my novice attempt of a network.

Re: New SA1100 and network

Here's some things to check.

1. Make sure the 10BT is not a crossover cable (see item 3).

2. Use NIC 1 not NIC 2 ( make sure the light on the front panel is lit for proper nic.

3. Check the cable connection by plugging into a PC to make sure the cable/port etc are working correctly.

4. Make sure the IP isn't duplicated.

5. Are you using a firewall router? If so make sure it's configured to use IP addresses in the range of the IP you've assigned.

Off the top of my head, that's what I'd try. Unfortunately all the lights being on really don't say much if they aren't the proper lights.

Good luck.

Re: New SA1100 and network

OK,

I have the correct cable. Not a cross over.

I am hooked up to NIC 1.

The appropriate indicator is lit for NIC 1.

I have put an IP adrress on my server. I just pick a random IP address not used on my network. I do not have anything in the default gateway.

I do not have a firewall/router yet, but am in the process of getting one.

I have shutoff my DSL. I tried to get to my server by typing in http:// My IP Address / :5555

I get nothing.

Any more things to look at? Am I missing something on my network?

Re: New SA1100 and network

I have a similar problem, save that I have a static subnet (mask 255.255.255.224) and can get intermittant contact to the SA1100. Pings will drop packets within my subnet to the SA1100 but NOT to other machines, attempting to use the wizard invariably stops me at some point since HTTP depends on fairly good connectivity. In general things are very very unstable as far as network traffic goes.

I got my server new through uBid, did you get yours there also? It is a new HP product with full warranty but it is annoying to have something not work as it is supposed to right out of the box. Troubleshooting continues but right now I am glad I saved the box!!

Re: New SA1100 and network

Yes, I got mine through Ubid. I have my net setup. I can ping everything except the SA1100. My DSL still works, etc. I tried other cables to make sure that is not the problem, but I cannot make it work. i do not have a default gateway, and I think that may be part of my problem. Any one out there with more advice for me?

Re: New SA1100 and network

It sounds like your network is not set up correctly. It may be an issue of how your hardware is connected, or how your computer is configured, or you may be missing a piece of equipment. (That just about covers everything, doesn't it.)

The first step is to find out how you have your network wired together. For example, do you have the phone line connected to the dsl box, the dsl box connected to the hub in the highest port, and the two computers (your 2k box and your sa1100) connected to the hub in the lower ports? Draw me a mental picture.

Also, let me know any information about the make, model, and description of your dsl box.

Basically, I'm going to guess that you do not have a piece of hardware acting as your IP address gatekeeper. Something in your network must assign and keep track of all the ip addresses in your network. Windows 2k could do this for you or the right kind of dsl modem/router could also do the trick.

For my home network, I use a little dsl router to handle my ip addresses and provide a little firewall protection. The way I am set up is my phone line comes in, connects to a dsl modem, which connects to a router which has all my computers connected to it. With this little set up, I was up and going with my eBid server within 15 minutes. Granted, I work with computers and networks all day, but I don't pretend to be an ISP guru.

If you don't mind answering a series of questions, I may be able to help you along.

Re: New SA1100 and network

I'm curious, what IP did you assign to the sa1100?

Re: New SA1100 and network

First things first. You said you typed in <<>>

This syntax should be http://1.2.3.4:5555/

Don't forget the http, IE does not know to look for HTTP protocol on a non standard port.

Second, I figured out for some strange reason or other our HP SA1100s' do not want to respond to ping on a particular Cisco switch we are using. It still works (I can still connect to the ports and do the things we need to do with the system.).

I believe the problem is with the Cisco, but everything is fine other than the ICMP so I don't worry about it.

Also, you mention that you just picked a random IP not on your network; you NEED to have an IP that your other machine's can see the sa1100.

If you just had a typo above then I apologize for not being any help.

Also, Steven, are you using a switch or a hub? I highly recommend you try using a good switch before calling the guys over at HP.

Re: New SA1100 and network

UPDATE for those watching this...

I have finally accessed my HP SA1100. With my current configuration which is;

Windows 2000 pro sharing a DSL internet conection and then a hub, I cannot access my SA1100 with the DSL share up. In short, I went in, disabled my DSL share (effectively disabling my DSL), isigned my PC's with 192.168.0.1, 2, 3 etc. (local IP adresses) and then I was in and setting everything up. Pretty easy to setup.

How I am going to advance on this is;
1. get a router with programable IP addresses.
2. Get a static IP address from my ISP. This should get me on the net.

Question....
Should I use the DNS provided on the machine to resolve IP addresses and let my ISP know that is my intentions. Sorry for the novice approach here, but I am expanding my computer knowledge by setting this up at home on my own net. This is my attempt to become more knowledgable in this area.

Re: New SA1100 and network

To reply:
Yes I use a BayStack unmanaged 10/100 switch (Nortel 70-24T) and the device was tested with multiple Cat 5 cables and on multiple ports, further the ports themsevles were tested with other machines as well. The ethernet cable is alittle lose and when I had these symtoms in a Wallstreet G3 it turned out to be the ENet port coming apart from the stresses of being a laptop on a cable. However since the SA1100 was advertised as new there is no reason for the port to be FUBAR. Like I said, if I fiddle with the cable sometimes I can get and establish a connection for alittle while, but if I let loose of the cable it soon stops (I have to hold the cable in the port JUST SO and watch the pinging machine to determine if it works).

I really really want to get this fixed. The uBid advert said it included the Mfrs one year warrenty so I am going to get the SN ect off it, register it, and call customer service. I know most people got units that worked right outta the box, I guess I just got a bad unit.

Re: New SA1100 and network

I have a 32 address subnet, so there are NO POSSIBLE PROBLEMS with IP address assignment via any protocol. The SA1100 has a valid IP address not duplicated on my network, a valid subnet mask, valid nameservers.... ect, ect, ect.

In other words the thing simply does NOT work.

From its behavior I would guess that at some time before it was refurbed the ethernet cables on it were yanked on, damaging the motherboard connection to the 10BaseT jack. This produced what was probably then a momentary problem that gradually got worse, so they got rid of it. When HP went to recondition it they probably put it on a tester such that the short was open instead of closed, and it worked.. (I can get it to work intermittantly by putting upward pressure on the cable end).

For background I have a BS in Computer Science with Micro Computer specialization (meaning I know how to build a computer from a pile of sand and a few other things).

HP, You sent some of these machines out broken, what if anything are you going to do about it? They are supposed to have an HP Warrenty.

Re: New SA1100 and network

To answer a question I missed at first...

Yes, I have an excellent Bay Networks 10/100 switch. No problems with it on any other machine in the house. It's not a managed switch so there is no possibility of a problem there. It's pure "store and forward".

Second, I have been at this over 20 years now. I don't tend to make rookie mistakes anymore and I am intimately familiar with networking.

Some of these machines just went out bad it looks like, and having gotten them through uBid (and the HP warrenty might even have expired.... I have been so busy that the SA1100 has been a back issue).

I think ultimately that I will just go in and repair the darn thing myself. I am 95% sure of the problem (unless its a bad Ethernet ASIC in which case I am of of luck if it was surface mount)
