Alletra 5050 Best Practice for the size of volumes
With the hpe Alletra 5050 what is the best practice for the size of volumes? nobody seems to be able to answer this question because saying "keep volumes small".
In vmware its called "VVOL datastore" which then creates a VVOL volume on the Alletra.
For example,
My Array is 431 TIB
I am using Vmware and VVOLS.
I want to allocate 50 TIB for virtual machines
and the rest of the space about 381 Tib for security video data.
For the 50 TIB should I create one 50 TIB Volume? Should I create 2 25 TIb volumes? Should I create 5 10 TIB Volumes?
Whats best practice.
Same question for the remaining space of 381 TIB?

Re: Alletra 5050 Best Practice for the size of volumes
Hi mfahey79,
The Virtual Volume size can be created in HPE Alletra 5050 must be greater than "0" and less than "133169152" MiB (mebibytes) or ( 127 TiB (Tebibyte)).
Creating a 50 TiB Virtual Volume is easy, but it may be difficult to manage as it grows and may have performance limitations.
It is common practice to create Virtual Volumes in the range of 5-10 TiB from the 50 TiB. This will improve manageability and performance.
A smaller Virtual Volume can sometimes provide better performance than a larger one due to better distribution of I/O operations. However, a large number of small Virtual Volumes can also result in more overhead.
It can be easier to perform tasks such as snapshots, replication, and backups by having more and smaller Virtual Volumes.
If your business grows in the future, consider expanding Virtual Volumes or adding new ones without causing significant disruptions.
Hope this helps.!
Regards,
Satish

Re: Alletra 5050 Best Practice for the size of volumes
To clarify if I want to use 50TB of space for Vmware VVOLS,
I would do the following:
Create 5 10TB VVOL Virtual disks ?

Re: Alletra 5050 Best Practice for the size of volumes
Hi mfahey79,
Creating VVol's are based on your requirements and needs.
As i said, creating large volumes may difficult to manage and may have performance limitations.
VMware Virtual Volumes are not manually created for each VM or use case, rather they are created dynamically based on the requirements of each VM.
VVol's datastores allow VMware to allocate storage as needed based on the amount of data in them.
Hope this helps.!
