HPE Alletra initialize system
HI
We are about to acquire new HPE Alletra MP system but in all documentation I couldnt find how to initialize system on which port and if there is any IP address setup initially to connect this is how it is done on HPE Synergy where address is 192.168.10.1 and then via browser you assign IP address on your computer and this is how you connect to Synergy to initialize it
But for alletra there is nothing like that anyone has initial IP address or if i use discovery tool it says computer and storage have to be in the same subnet what subnet that would be and is initialization done via service port

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
Also https://infosight.hpe.com/welcomecenter/ Guide you Step by Step to the Setup Path.
Regarding the first Connect:
If you have bought the Bluetooth Dongle, I would use it with the HPE Storage App for Easy Setup.
If not, you can use the Discovery Tool.

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
Hello,
as you can see, in the Upright Corner, I can Open the Welcome Center, without any Login:
The Discovery Tool (or Bluetooth), the Link to Download Software, and the Documentation are explained here.
Also here you will find a detailed Video for Cabling:
No secret account is needed and no classified Information.

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
6010 is a Nimble Storage, not an MP.
For MP choose "Alletra Storage MP B10000".

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
I can verify this for the Alletra 6030 (Nimble) Storage.
But you wrote, that you have an Alletra MP, in that case, you have to select "Alletra MP B10000" first.
And for this Model, I can successfully view all Videos, without login.
So, first be sure, if you have an Alletra MP or Alletra 6030.

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
That's true, it seems that something is broken here and needs to be fixed by HPE.
But you can Download the Installation Guide in the Top Right, that works for me without login?

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
do you underestand this statement
Connecting your computer to the same subnet as the storage system
About this task
The computer you use to perform the initialization of the storage system must be on the same subnet and switch as the storage system.
Procedure
1. To connect your computer to the same physical LAN switch as the HPE storage system controllers connected their Admin ports to :
Connect a standard Cat5e cable from your computer NIC to the same physical LAN switch that the controllers are connected to.
They say same subnet but they dont specify there are millions of possible subnets for example 192.168.0.0/24 is one subnet but 192.168.1.0/24 is another subnet
If i discover system with laptop I guess I have to put the cable into service port none of HPE documentation specifies that they just say open the tool but hard to imagine that without any cables it will discover

First it doesnt say that we need to connect cable and it is hard to imagine without connecting laptop with some port on array it will communicate
Second it says connect to the same subnet but it doesnt say what subnet for example if i understand networking correctly 192.168.0.0/24 is one subnet but 192.168.1.0/24 is another subnet
it just say same subnet what does that mean

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
You are right, I think that is misleading, I think what is meant is the following:
Assume you connect the Management Ports to Switch ports 1 and 2 and your Laptop to Port 3 then, ports 1-3 have to be in the same VLAN or have no VLAN.
If Port 1&2 is in VLAN 100 and Port 3 in VLAN 101 you are unable to connect.
In the other case, the Multicast DNS (mDNS) search of the Discovery Tool will not find the Storage.
Alternatively, you can directly connect the laptop to the top management port and set your Laptop NIC to DHCP.
In that case, the Laptop should get an IP from the Storage Controller.
Then use the Discovery Tool.
Do not use/connect the Service Port, as you wrote, this is a Serial Port with CAT Connector, use the Management Port (Left Labeled: Admin).
(I prefer to use the BT Dongle and Mobile App.)

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
Ya I am aware that HPE doesnt have employees who are good with documentation most likely students who never even saw the system in action
When i start installing this system I was wondering there is a port that I connect to array directly no switches just direct
Like in HPE synergy I connect to service port which is RJ 45 type in my browser4 192.168.10.1 and I am connected initial discovery via switches will certainly fail
You are right if we buy USB dongle then it is easy to do it with phone but in case that we didnt I expected direct connection from laptop to array and start discovering not sure why they made it so complicated

You can do that.
Plug the Cable in Admin Port and strait to your Laptop.
The Laptop will get an IP and you can start Discover the Storage.

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
you mean it will get 169 IP address because if it is in admin port no DHCP server so the only thing it can get is 169 and then later I can assign IP of the array that I need

Re: HPE Alletra initialize system
In that case, Alletra offers an IP to the Client.
I assume that temporarily a small DHCP server is running on the Alletra for this purpose.
Anyway, somehow it works, because I did it that way too.
