HP StorageWorks 1/8 Ultrium Autoloader on Win Serv 2003

Hello,

we are having numerous problems with our brand new 1/8 Ultrium autoloader in Windows Server 2003. Specifically it routinely times out. For example in MS Backup the autoloader took an excessive amount of time to complete the operation. Or when using Legato Networker 7.1 the unit times out-loses the connection and hangs after about 400 MB. It is attached to an Adaptec 2940 and a Proliant DL380. The drivers in Device Manager are correct and up to date and the flash bios in the unit was upgraded via HP TapeTools.

If you really mean an Adaptec 2940 (and not an 2940U2W), that is NOT a supported interface card. The 2940 is Single Ended 20MB/sec. The autoloader (drive) is LVDS 80MB/sec.

A 2940U2W is supported, but only in a PCI (not PCI-X) system. The preferred card would be a 19160/29160 in a PCI-X server.

Is your DL380 a G2, or a G3? The G2 is PCI, and the G3 is PCI-X.

To ad more information you should check Adaptec's site www.adaptec.com - most of the 2940 series cards are not support on Windows 2003... however it may be a problem with NT backup (RSM) - check Microsofts website www.microsoft.com there is a hotfix specifically for the version of 2003 NT backup - there are known issues and the hotfix puts on the older version of NT Backup

I cam through a similar issue the other day, but the scsi Card was Adaptec 29160
You need to make sure that SCSI card is connected on the first or second PCI Slot on the Board.

I assumed yo'R utilizing both MS Backup and Lagato simultaneously, 'em I right? if yes, try to to disable you native backup services (RSM) then re-install Legato without any other 3rd party backup software for isolation.

also, try the ff. suggestion:

-use Ultra 2 SCSI se/lvd interface
-check bent pins
-proper scsi termination
-use compatible oem tape tools
-isolate you autoloader from another server box, then observe.
-check if legato software is capable to run together with installed native tape device driver(Win2003 native) if not, un-install all involved tape driver from device manager (win2003)then run legato.
