HP StorageWorks DAT72X6 extremely slow backup.

I have the following configuration:-

•Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition Service pack 1 with all necessary updates applied.

•ML330 G3 with all updates applied.

•Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 Service pack 4a applied be4691RSP4a_280008.exe
oBackupExecTapeDeviceDriverInstall_273853.exe applied

•HP Storage Works 72x6 DAT with 5 media and one cleaning tape.

•64Bit/66MHz Dual SCSI Controller connects the tape device to the Server.

Problem: - The backup is extremely slow. We managed to back up 5Gb in 90 Hours.

I need to be able to backup up to 70GB in 3 Hours.

Please advise where we can start trouble shooting.

Help.

Re: HP StorageWorks DAT72X6 extremely slow backup.

Hi Garry,

The best way to start trouble shooting is to start things off using Library and Tape Tools.

HP Storage Works Library and Tape Tools can be downloaded from the following link:

http://www.hp.com/support/lttdownload

NOTE: It may be necessary to copy and paste the above URL into the web address bar of an Internet browser.

The newest version is currently version four.

Before launching the utility you will need to make sure that all back-up services are stopped, including the Removable Storage service.

NOTE: If you are running Microsoft Windows 2003 you will need to ensure that you start and then stop the Removable Storage Service manually. Please refer to Microsoft Knowledgebase article 842411 for more information on the Removable Storage Service.

Upon completion of the download, you may proceed with the installation.

Directions are as follows:

1. Download or copy the self extracting executable file to a temporary location.
2. Double-click the self extracting executable file to launch the installer. The InstallShield Wizard screen is displayed.
3. Click next. Read the program license agreement and click Yes if you agree and accept the terms of the license agreement.
4. Read the readme file for any last-minute changes to the documentation, then click Next.

In most cases, the default settings of this screen are adequate. If ASPI installation is optional with your OS, HP recommends that you NOT install ASPI support unless you have good reason to do so.
5. Select a destination location to install the program. You can accept the default location or click Browse to install to a different location. After choosing the destination location, click next.
6. Indicate the program directory in which you want the setup program to create program icons and click Next. The program directory is created in the Programs directory of the Start menu.
7. On the Ready to start installation process screen, click Next. If you need to review or change installation settings, click Back.
8. When installation is complete, click Finish to close the InstallShield wizard.

I will also mention, the DAT 72 drive has a maximum transfer speed of approximate 6 Mb/s compressed. This works out to about 21 and a half gigs an hour. As a result likely will not complete a 70 GB back-up job in 3 hours. Just wanted to make you aware of this fact.

Hope the above information helps.
