AD LIB + ESS Audio Problemin Win 98 SE, Compaq Armada 4120 Laptop
Model: Compaq Armada 4120 - Windows 98 SE
I am having this problem with my sound in Win 98 SE, My Audio made up of 2 components ( ESS Audio Drive (1788) and the Ad Lib compatible (OPL2) sound chip, I just changed hard drives and where on my old hard drive It finds the driver for this "Ad Lib" sound chip and on my new HD with fresh copy of windows 98 SE It Doesn't Install a new driver + IT DOESN'T EVEN FIND IT AT ALL! - I tried everything add New Hard ware... - Well the only thing my new HD picked up and installed drivers for is just the ESS Audio Drive, in fact I even have the "Speaker" icon down in the sys Icon Tray saying its working,
But there is no audio/music coming from the speakers, and that's because of the Ad Lib Chip not present.
Where can I find a driver for the " Ad Lib Compatible (OPL2) " Sound chip that's attached to the " ESS Audio Drive (1788) "

Go to:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/armada/us/locate/4_862.html
The driver you need is probably part of the ESS Direct Sound Support. The generic one in Win98 just won't do.
You might also want to read:

Re: AD LIB + ESS Audio Problemin Win 98 SE, Compaq Armada 4120 Laptop
Jon,
Guess you just have to reinstall ESS 1788. I'm personally using the SP "8485.exe" built in 1998, that I found on Compaq's support page.
Prior to installing this SP, you may be wishing to check whether or not it is compatible with a laptop. Another recommandation, create a file hosting essential drivers somewhere on your disk or on a separate partition.
