browse the network error

From time to time some of my users are unable browse the network. They are told that the domain is not accepting any more connections. It is allways possible to connect by typing the network address.

I have a small (50 users) netword running NT 4 server sp6 as my domain controller. My server is much higher spec than required for the job.

Thanks,

John.

Re: browse the network error

Could be a licensing issue. Do you have enough licenses to cover all 50 users?

Did you go per server or per seat?

Re: browse the network error

Microsoft also states that if the WINS server doesn't reference itself as the Primary and Secondary WINS server that (in rare conditions) it may loose connectivity.

Re: browse the network error

The exact error message my users receive is:-

Pti is not accessible. No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept.

PTI is my domain name and not my server name. There is no shortage of licenses or resources on my server. I get no error messages in the event log on the server but the following appears on the event log on the user pc.

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_El90x1. The backup browser is stopping.

The source of this error is Browser with event is 8032 and no category.

Re: browse the network error

I think I have found the answer in microsoft Q135404. The server has 2 network cards and the solution was to break the binding for the workstation service on one of the cards.

Re: browse the network error

Specifically, a "multi-homed" server can only provide browser services for one sub-net.

I ran across entries for this yesterday, but didn't realize that this was your case.

Good sleuthing!
