Cpu usage 100% no programs running

Hey Guys, has anyone ever had a problem like this?
4 week old Evo D310 running 2k pro with the 2.4 P IV 845g and 256 MB DDR
is locked at 100%. I can go in in safe mode and it drops to normal. In task mgr, System is using 99% and when I utilize another program it will subtract from system..and then after terminating the app it will return to 99% at system. rebooted the workstation various times and nothing..it began as i was reinstalling roxio easy cd creator after it errorred out during my attempts to back-up on DVD.It wont do a disc clean-up on my C: now...I really dont want to do a restore which is what the geniuses at compaq are telling me...any ideas fellows?
I am a great believer in luck, I find the Harder I work, the more I have

ohhh it's a compaq is it? =D i'm not sure if you meant you checked this or not, but in tash manager, under processes... does something have a high number under the CPU bar? if so i'd would say that's it. I am just taking a guess, but it sounds like Roxio planted something into your startup, and since it errored is sucking up your resources. another thought is to use something like Msconfig (which you'd have to add to your \command folder), and uncheck any unecessary services... good luck!

Another thought, It could be a virus(or worm).
Update your definition and do a full scan.
You can also notice whether any frequent disk activity when the Pc is idle. I have seen similar on HP PC, and it was a virus.

Re: Cpu usage 100% no programs running

hi there,

I was wondering if you figured out what the problem is. I am having the same thing going on on my HP Omnibook 6100 using WIndows XP SP1.

The "System" process always holds 99% of the CPU usage. All applications will get a portion if started but when exiting it goes back to the System process.

Not all processes will be listed in the Windows Task Manager.

To get a better impression of what really is using the cpu-cycles, I would recommend downloading Process Explorer from:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

This is a free tool, and also allows you to kill any process.

Cheers,
