NORTON GHOST 2002 W2K HP M820 CDRW

Hello,

I am trying to setup a dos boot disquette to use Norton Ghost 2002 on a laptop with HP M820 CDRW drive.

Dos card/socket services load OK but HP drivers fail to load with a message :" card not inserted or card information not found; driver unloaded" upon load of the first driver. (KMAS365A.SYS pcmcia card
driver ver 1.02 ).

Hereafter a copy of config.sys.

Thanks in advance for the help/feedback,

P Wachholder

Try kmasmgra.sys instead of kmas365a.sys. It worked for me. However, Ghost wouldn't recognize the cd writer... I also hope somebody out there can point us a good direction to follow... I loaded pcmcia driver, then m820 dos driver, but Ghost 2002 still cannot detect the cd writer. M820 is listed in Symantec as compatible cd writer for Ghost 2002, so... anybody knows how???

Re: NORTON GHOST 2002 W2K HP M820 CDRW

I got reply from Symantec about this topic.

"Ghost 2002 has been tested with the M820 SCSI CD-RW drive.
Ghost is not seeing this drive because it uses the PCMCIA interface.
Ghost does not support PCMCIA hard drives, PCMCIA SCSI devices, or
PCMCIA CD-ROM drives because these devices are not supported in DOS.

Some PCMCIA SCSI adapters use nonstandard commands and can sometimes
not provide the information that Ghost expects. Nonstandard commands
could cause Ghost to restart, exit to DOS, or display error messages
that cannot be resolved."

It's somehow contradictory... as this cd writer was listed as compatible... and now they say that devices with PCMCIA won't work with Ghost. Well, just post this on the net, just in case somebody comes in search for the same information...

Hello,

Thanks for you 2 earlier posts.
Looks like you were a bit more lucky with Norton's support. They turned me down altogether and refused to support the configuration through their web support.

Still, the answer you've recedived looks stupid to me.

PCMCIA devices can work OK in dos, provided your system has proper card/socket services or card enabler for a specific card ; plus dos device drivers for the pcmcia card.

Multiple pcmcia cards were working OK a couple of years ago under dos/windows 3.x implementation (looks like prehistoric times for some people)

And, as you mentioned, it looks funny that the HPM820 is mentioned within Norton ghost Hardware compatibility list as it can only be driven through a pcmcia adapter.

Would you be kind as to mention the reference of your call to Norton support.

I would like to escalate this further with them because I think their support to this issue really is bad.

Re: NORTON GHOST 2002 W2K HP M820 CDRW

Hello,
First I post here my config.sys for m820 cd writer (Symantec didn't supply this to me). With this configuration (Ghost doesn't need kmascda.sys, nor nwcdex.exe/mscdex.exe in autoexec.bat as Symantec explains in support pages), you should get DOS to recognize the drive wihtout problem. (I use CardSoft PCMCIA driver.)

************************
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS /testmem:off
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILES=20
BUFFERS=20

REM CardSoft(TM) 3.1 PCMCIA DRIVERS
DEVICEHIGH=a:\CARDSOFT\SS365LP.EXE
DEVICEHIGH=a:\CARDSOFT\CS.EXE
DEVICEHIGH=a:\CARDSOFT\CSALLOC.EXE

rem ----------------
rem PCMCIA CDRW ASPI
rem ----------------

devicehigh=a:\cdr2w\kmasmgra.sys
DEVICEhigh=a:\CDR2W\KMASASPA.SYS

Lastdrive=z
*************************

Second, Symantec's answer to my request can be found here: http://servicenews.symantec.com/cgi-bin/displayArticle.cgi?group=symantec.support.network.ghost2002.general&article=16256

I read Symantec's reply to your question. That was stupid, I agree. That's part of the reason why I asked them again, but with a slightly different angle... Well, the result wasn't too much different...

I was thinking about the difference between m820 and m820e. Maybe they are two different cd writers??? One is SCSI and the other PCMCIA SCSI???

By the way, just a curiosity. I tried DriveImage 5, and with the same configuration, DriveImage 5 CAN recognize the cd writer without problem, even use it as destination drive. But, as m820 is not listed as compatible for DriveImage 5, it does fail to write image to CDR... (So, this let me think that the fault is on Ghost's side.)

Cheers, Wachholder. Let me know if you have further informtion...

Re: NORTON GHOST 2002 W2K HP M820 CDRW

Hi Cheng,

Thanks for your feedback.

I'll give a try with the kpm* ddriver mentioned in your post and feedback later this week end.

The dos card socket/services drivers should be specific to the hw of the laptop so that our configs should differ on this.

I will also get back to Norton quality support/feedback since I do think that their support is really not appropriate on the issue.

Last,if you can get an hand on an adaptec 1460 slimscsi adapter (16 bit, not a cardbus 1480b since cardbus is not supported in dos), it uses aspi2dos as aspi driver and might be recognized by Ghost.

I wonder wheter Norton did not test/succeed with that adapter instead of the one bundled with the M820.
