Problem receiving message forwarded from Internet e-mail account

I have one mailbox that is setup to receive messages forwarded from an Internet e-mail account. When that user sends a message to their Internet account via Exchange, the message gets stuck in the Outbound queue as "Host Unreachable" with their Exchange account listed in the recipients. It seems that somewhere user@internet.com is translated to user@acc.edu before the account leaves our site. There are no errors in either the Application or System logs.

I'm a little confused as to who is sending what where, but it sound like a dns issue.

Re: Problem receiving message forwarded from Internet e-mail account

I'm not sure exactly how you have the mailbox set up to get messages forwarded from the internet account -- is this a server-side rule at the outside account; or is your local user using the Internet E-mail service in his Outlook profile; or is this a separate mailbox on your Exchange server?

It sounds like you have a separate mailbox, and it also sounds like that mailbox has the user@internet.com address associated with it (listed as one of the entries in the E-mail addresses tab within Exchange administrator), as well as the user@acc.edu address. If the user@acc.edu address is the primary address (in bold), the Exchange server will make the translation that you're seeing.

Is this an accurate picture, or have I made some wrong assumptions?

Re: Problem receiving message forwarded from Internet e-mail account

The Internet account is setup to forward from their e-mail to ours. There is nothing in the Exchange e-mail properties for the outside Internet account. There is nothing set in Outlook to access the Internet account.

Re: Problem receiving message forwarded from Internet e-mail account

Okay, I think I understand the situation better now. You have a user who's got one Exchange mailbox, user@acc.edu. This person also has an external e-mail account, user@internet.com. The user@internet.com account is configured to forward e-mail to the user@acc.edu account.

So the question is: When sending an e-mail FROM user@acc.edu TO user@internet.com, at what point is the e-mail address getting changed?

If another user on another workstation sends an e-mail to the user@internet.com account, does the re-addressing still occur?
-If so, there may be an entry in the global address list that has user@internet.com as one of its e-mail addresses. The e-mail in the user's Sent Items folder should show the display name from the global address book to who it wants to deliver the message to, which should save tons of time otherwise spent combing through the GAL.
-If not, check the original user's contacts folder and personal address book for any entries with the user@internet.com address.

Hope this helps,

Re: Problem receiving message forwarded from Internet e-mail account

The problem only seems to occur when a mailing list is used with the users internet account. If user@acc.edu sends an e-mail to user@internet.com the message seems to go through fine. However if user@acc.edu sends a message to mailinglist@internet.com the message that should go to user@internet.com is not delivered. The internet account is a Notes account that is forwarded via SMTP to user@acc.edu. I am starting to believe the problem lies within Notes, not Exchange
